Beautiful Picture

Great light and composition. The fact that it's Utah really makes it easy to get an awesome picture, but good job anyway!

It's time for me to start traveling outside of California :)

Maybe not.

One of the things that makes the area so cool is that most of the towers and canyons are still un-named (and most are still un-climbed in this area, though a few such as Tomsich Butte and Family Butte have been climbed in the past few years). If I did name a peak, it would be after a natural feature on the peak rather than after myself. I still say leave them all un-named, so the people who see them can make up their own names with their own imagination and leave them un-named for the next person.

Tomsich Butte

Scott,

Nice Shot!

I'm sure this is Tomsich Butte, unless the maps are wrong. Take a look at my picture. Notice the cliffs to the top right and in yours. Tomsich Butte, in my picture, is on the left and behind that rise. My picture was taken a little less than a half a mile from the butte from the West-northwest.

Re: Tomsich Butte

I thought the butte was the one on the left? Tomsich Butte as shown on the maps is here. It's only shown as 5870 feet high, where as the sandstone cliffs in our pictures are around 6500 feet.

Re: Tomsich Butte

The one on the left is definately not Tomsich Butte. I have climbed Tomsich Butte (this year), and it is made of Wingate and Navajo Sandstone. The one on the left is made of Moenkopi, a completely different kind of rock.

This isn't Tomsich Butte either, but will show the rock layers:

What you are seeing in the nameless tower on the left (in the "Another nameless tower" photo) is the red layer at the bottom of the photo in the link. The upper layer is what Tomsich Butte is made of.

If you know what direction your photo was taken, I could figure out which one this un-named one is. Do you remember?

Re: Tomsich Butte

Yes,

My photo was taken from the west-northwest, about a half a mile away. Right where you would first cross Muddy Creek enroute to Gem Canyon.

I'm just confused because as labeled on the topo Tomsich Butte is in the middle of that valley. The only thing in the middle of that valley is whats in your photo. Here is a photo of the same thing in your picture taken from the abandoned mine adjacent the peak. Another shot of what's in your picture and the Tomsich Butte trailhead. Sorry for all this confusion!

Where is Tomsich Butte?

Got it (I think). You are looking from the mines on Tomsich at Hondu Arch. The nameless red butte is the one marked on the topo map:

Re: Tomsich Butte

Ok,

Looks good to me!

I knew that your picture was of that feature right by the Tomsich Butte trailhead. I figured that was Tomsich Butte. After looking at the elevation and size it didn't add up. Thanks for figuring that one out :-)

Re: Tomsich Butte

Yep, now I know which one the "nameless one" is too. I had forgotten.
