South side walk in the woods  Sucess!

Forest Rd 3828 on south side, then a short off-trail hike up the south side through a Ponderosa pine forest. Great view of Klamath Lakes, Mt. McLoughlin, and Shasta.

Aspen Butte & Pelican Butte  Sucess!

Used NF-3828 road to get to the saddle between Little Aspen and Aspen Butte. We then went cross country to the summit and back in a round-trip of under 4 miles. Really thins out after the crossing into the wilderness and never gets terribly steep. Excellent views from the summit.

Great 48 hr backpack trip with my wife and dogs, making the loop counterclockwise from the west TH. Climbed the knob below Aspen as a bonus.

Clover Creek Trail  Sucess!

Very little remaining snow, foggy and windy on the way up. By the time I reached summit the fog was really starting to retreat, nice views across the way to McLoughlin. Did Carmine immediately following this one.

Wild Weather, Great Dayhike  Sucess!

Had planned to hike in to the basin between Aspen Butte and Mount Carmine to camp overnight and summit both of them in the morning. On my way in, though, bad weather kicked up (thunderstorms and rain), so I dropped my pack at the point where the train drops down into the basin and scrambled up Aspen Butte while keeping an eye on the storm.

It blew off to the side of the butte, so I descended down to the saddle between the butte and Carmine and bushwhacked my way up to its summit before returning to my gear and hiking out to the car by headlamp. A very long dayhike, but great fun. Aspen Butte was clearly the superior of the two view-wise, but there was a really neat (huge!) gendarme on Carmine that was worth the digression in and of itself.

Aspen Butte  Sucess!

Kessler and I climbed the peak from Clover Creek.

The day before we climbed Mt McLoughlin, but the sky was very smoky and the views weren’t that great. September 2 was much clearer so we decided to climb Aspen Butte. It was a nice little climb and the views were better than they were the day before. It was still too smoky to see Mt Shasta though. We still got a good view of Mt McLaughlin and north to the Mt Thielson area.

There were four other people climbing the mountain and two others seen on the trail, but it was a much less popular climb than Mt McLaughlin. There were no mosquitoes so early September must be a good time to climb.

Beagle chases elk  Sucess!

Pat and I did the vertical manzanita bushwhack in from the east to Pass Lake. Climbed Mt. Carmine on the 7th, slept ... kind of. A beagle chased a bunch of elk right over the top of us near midnight. Climbed Aspen Butte on the 8th and hiked out.

Beautiful area  Sucess!

I climbed this as part of a long trail run up the Varney Creek Trail. I did a CW loop going north of Lake Harriet and once on top, I backtracked to the trail that goes west of the peak and then north, rejoining the Varney Cr. Tr. somewhere north of lake Como. I think this was about 20 miles and even late in the season, I remember there were plenty of mosquitoes!

Aspen Butte  Sucess!

Hiked to the summit of Aspen Butte while backpacking in Mountain Lakes Wilderness in October 1978. We hiked up from Harriet Lake. It seemed like I spent quite a while at the summit just sitting there and enjoying the views.

Great fall hike  Sucess!

Bob Bolton and I hiked up to the top in questionable weather. It had snowed the night before and it looked like it might rain or snow on us as we approached the summit. However, the wind stopped and the weather improved for the time we were there and so we enjoyed reasonable weather on the summit. I left a register and a container near the summit highpoint. A benchmark placed in 1920 in great condition is very close to the summit.

Nice Hike to Aspen Butte  Sucess!

This was the last time I hiked to Aspen Butte. I would recommend it later in the summer when the mosquitoes have died.
