At the upper 3rd of Ortler...

At the upper 3rd of Ortler Hintergrat: we were alone this day due to massive snow the day before. But had to turn back just 300m below the summit. The traverse to the final slope was very risky due to avalanches. But enjoyed a wonderfull day and view to the famous Koenigsspitze north face. Picture taken late summer 2000.

Most Probably. It is definitely not on the normal route. Nice view of Zufallspitze / Cevedale in the background.



Perhaps somebody could add Hintergrat info to the Ortler page.

Yes, it's at the Hintergrat. I have edited the picture title

correspondingly. The Hintergrat in general is less

exposed than it looks at the photo. Nevertheless when

there is much snow it is a bit risky. We turned back this

day and our traces were gone with an avalanche.

With good conditions I think the Hintergrat will be quite

crowded. We decided to use it for descending next

time. We will approach Ortler via the ridge leading

from Königsspitze. It looked very impressive from

the Hintergrat.

I will add some info as soon as I have completed this

route. We have planned it for this summer 2002.

By the way the Cevedale in the background is more

interesting for an approach by ski in spring. In summer

it is a rather crowded glacier walk.

Hi Peter, did you ever do that ridge from Monte Zebru to the Ortler summit? I was on the Hintergrat Saturday and I agree with you...it looks like a great climb on that ridge too!

Rather cool picture, I like it (doesn't look like summer).

When we were there, it was nearly completely dry (approx. 10 years ago).
