Up St John's trail, then over to Picacho Peak. moderate incline and a little slippery snow on the trail to Picacho. Well-marked and easy to follow. View on top is partially obstructed by trees

A nice short climb
This is a nice, short, steep hike. Good trail to the top. A great hike to prep for bigger mountains.
This was the first peak I ever climbed, c.1974 when I was a teenager living in my home town of Santi-Flush. Free-solo via the off-trail W Face Direttissema.

Had fun
Visiting Santa Fe for the week, hiked up this peak one morning, enjoyed it very much. Lots of people, including walking their dogs. One dog got away from his owner and came running at me, barking and snarling. But fortunately he stopped feet from me and ran back to his owner.
Started at St. John's College. The wildflowers were all in bloom...and everywhere! I enjoyed the hike in the lower portions through the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands. I also enjoyed the summit ridge and the views to the west (Jemez Mountains) and southwest (Sandias). Great little hike. I made it up in 1 hr 10 min, and down in 55 min.

Atalaya Yes
Enjoyable and beautiful hike, though somehow I went up on the North side of the peak, even when starting from St John's.
Went up here any number of times when I lived in Santa Fe.

Standard route from St John's College
We enjoyed fantastic weather on this nice little mountain. Plenty of water for the dogs in the stream lower down (thanks to ample recent rains). Loved the views from the top! Summit area is a great place for lunch.

I used to hike this trail often when I lived in New Mexico and Santa Fe.
July 2017 returned to visit Santa Fe and hiked it again. New trails, more people and still great views.
