I believe this is a Hoary Comma (Polygonia gracilis). The plant is a blooming Rabbitbrush. Autumn in the Spring Mountains, Nevada. September 2009.

You're too kind Dean. I feel almost guilty because this picture wasn't that hard to get. The butterfly seemed really hungry and wasn't paying mych attention to us.
