Baby Grouse

This baby ruffed grouse was frozen like a statue hoping I wouldn't see him. His mother was off in the brush after doing a little threatening spin dance and hissing at me. I didn't get the camera out in time for her, but I got this one of one of the babies. Cute thing. June 2009

quite a find!

Did you see it first, or did mom's act alert you to it?

Re: quite a find!

Mom's act let me know they were there. Whenever they act like she did, they are trying to distract you away from babies. I didn't go looking for the chicks, but a few more steps up the trail and they scattered from the underbrush close by. This one stayed trying the freeze rather than run defense.
