Ended up driving my 4X4 SUV almost to the peak, then walked the last 200 yard to peak. Nothing to see from up there, but bagged off another high point.
So did anybody know that there is another backbone mountain in Maryland 30 minutes away. I wondered around there for 40 minutes trying to find the highpoint via Mapquest directions. Finally I pulled out a map and realized I needed to be 20 minutes south of Oakland and not at Backbone Mountain 20 minutes east of Oakland. After that the hike was great, I really enjoyed it and bagged numbers 14 and 15 the same day.
My dog Spanky and I hit another snow covered highpoint. Please go to http://50summits.blogspot.com to read a complete report.
2nd in the same day!!
it's close to where I live currently so why not?
Strugged up the side of the hill by the powerlines area through the thick brush, dense woods and no trail along the ridge. The summit has really changed over the years.
Day 6 of work/HP trip in the Ohio Valley. Pretty fall color. Twenty first county (4th state) of trip. Nice drive.
followed the old road up from the west virginia side
Second HP of three for the day (WV, MD, PA). Lovely fall day. Leaves of every color on the trail. Nice views from the top. Signed the logbook, took a certificate, and met a couple of nice gentlemen at the top. HP #24!
Fun hike. Very short walk to the top. Met a couple from SD that was on a 13 week tour of the US.
Also climb nearest bump in WV
After driving from PA’s high point, we made the summit after a short climb. There was not much of a view on top, but the pick nick table was great to sit on. After signing the registry and taking a few pic’s we walked back down.
HP #3...from Spruce Knob and via the smallest church in the lower 48 to the tree crowded top of Backbone Mountain. Fun little power hike.
Came over from the WV highpoint to bag this one. Shared it with a horse
We hiked up the lush trail in high heat and high humidity.
Erin and I hiked up Backbone in the rain yesterday. No views to speak of, but we had fun scrambling on the slippery rocks near the state boundary marker. Then we drove on to bag the PA highpoint.
Started the day in Norton, VA and drove through West Virginia to get to the trailhead. Very nice evening hike. Well-marked trail. Nice summit. Mailbox, register, and certificates for hikers who complete this HP. HP #13.
This was my 2nd of 3 state highpoints in one day and my eighth state highpoint overall. Great weather for early spring!
Highpoint #12. Headed out before dawn while the family slept at the hotel. Very foggy; surprised to find people camped at the summit. You gotta love any state that has a town called "Accident."
My wife and I climbed this mt. to the occassional rifle shot going off in the mountains around us. It's hunting season so wear bright colors. This was my 5th HP and my wife's 4th. The trail is fairly easy to follow, but at one intersection a few four wheeler trails all come together and it isn't marked well to see which to take. Other than that, a nice day with a little bit of a view since there were no leaves on the trees.
