Backpacking in 1980

Outward Bound With My Orange Internal Frame Backpack

Resting on a hillside between bouts bushwhacking on Outward Bound course in 1980. It was interesting weather in western North Carolina that mid-June through early July. We had some hot high 80 degree days and several non-stop rainy days but then several 50 - 60 degree days that forced us to wear everything we had in our packs! Most of us shivered through hypothermia until bedtime once or twice. And that's me in the back on the left looking dazed.

This is precious ..

1980 wasn't really NOT so long ago!

Let's focus on the positive. This program
is GREAT for building character, as well as
enhancing the entire outdoor survival experience and bringing it to Life!

I'm not going to stand on my milk carton,
but I WISH every young person could experience an outdoor experience OUTSIDE of
their Comfort Zones of technological gadgets.

It would be a blessing in disguise ..

Re: This is precious ..

I agree, not so long ago to us!

And it's really sad to read that the majority of kids today never get any free time just to walk or play games outside. Not to mention know how to take care of themselves without a charged cell phone or GPS!

And now I'll get down off my soapbox too! (And go to summer camp with the Scouts in July where the kids cook their meals over a campfire, sleep in tents, play with flashlights, and swim in a big lake!)

Sounds fun, Kathy ..

I think what I'll remember most about this
picture is the beautiful smile seen in the
women's eyes, especially the one trying not to laugh.

Holy cheeseburger, Batman !!!
