Bacon Peak is on the horizon...

Bacon Peak is on the horizon left of center, and the eastern peak of Mt. Watson is below in this photo from the east ridge of Watson. Actually, that might have been from the summit, I can't remember since this was taken 23 years ago! August 1982.

Ah, the summer shot

Thanks for uploading some Watson photos. So that's what it looks like up there in summer.

Your shot makes the east summit look lower. Maybe it is and the map is in error.

Can you tell me what route you took to the west summit(s) and, if you can recall that far in history, the overall difficulty of the route?

Also, the caption on your photo of Baker-Shuksan from Watson (this one) is messed up. You also left out poor Anderson Butte in the foreground. Poor butte.

Re: Ah, the summer shot

I fixed the caption - thanks!

We traversed on the glacier to the saddle between the summit and the east peak. Then we basically scrambled the ridge. I don't remember if we encountered anything rated 4th class, but I don't think so. This was during my transition from backpacker to scrambler even though I had done a very few scrambling summits before then. This was a weekend backpack trip with my wife, Duane and his wife, and our two families' four kids aged from 6 down to 3. We camped at Anderson Lakes, and climbing Watson was almost an afterthought. After that summer Duane and I started targeting peaks instead of lakes.

I really don't see how it could be higher than the western summit. The photo seems conclusive to me, but I realize such views can be tricky. -Bob
