Baden-Powell  Sucess!

Did Baden-Powell from Vincent Gap: uneventful and a bit warm. Angeles Crest Hwy access to Vincent Gap is still from the east only.

vincent gap to dawson saddle and back  Sucess!

started from vincent gap at 10:35 AM, made Dawson Saddle, the road at 1:30 PM, hiked back and made vincent gap at 4:30 PM, touched summits of baden powell, burnham along the way. just under 6 hours. It was a very hot day, high nineties, ran out of water before descending the switchbacks down to vincent gap. Impressive views of the sierra and the ocean areas. 17 miles.

Great weather for a hike, fairly clear with some lower valley haze. A lot of snow and ice still on the lower trail. More so on north facing switchbacks than the east facing switchbacks until you gain altitude. At 8100 feet switched to crampons and climbed vertical. Modest postholing in some areas. Summit view of Baldy was spectacular. On descent ran into the only other summit hiker for the day, A Brit who was training for Shasta and going to enjoy his dinner on top. Only other soul encourted for the day was a trail runner training for the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance run.

Vincent Gap trail  Sucess!

Great day for a hike. I started solo, but met a couple of hikers on the way up. The entire trail was covered with new snow; we were the first ones in the new snow and the only ones on the mountain today.

We first did Mt. Burnham, which is something over 9,000 ft. Then, we summitted Baden-Powell. To make things a little challenging, we then dropped down along a very steep ridge to the summit of Ross Mountain. Ross is about 7'400 ft. elevation so we had dropped about 2,000 feet to get to it. The descent to Ross was tough enough, but then we had to ascend the 2'000 feet back up to Baden-Powell to get back to our start. This is a challenging hike.

First time i came up the mountain wiht ice on it. Above 7500 feet there was absolutely nobody else on the mountain. Would've been suicide without crampons! The sky was very clear and it was easy to see the ocean and Catalina Island. About 15 degrees with wind on the summit. Gorgeous day! Made it down pretty fast as we were glissading down most of the way, using our axe as brake.

This was my sixth hike up the trail since July, but the first time I turned back. The trail was just too icy this time. About half an hour up the trail, I encountered a group of three hikers coming down. They had boots and poles, but no crampons or ice axes. They were about 500 or so feet in elevatioin above me when one guy in the group had slipped and fallen down the slope. He looked me right in the face and said that the only reason he was alive was because he'd hit a tree and it broke his fall. He was convinced that he'd be dead if that hadn't happened. With only Yaktraks on my boots, I decided then and there to turn back. Glad I did. Met up with another couple of hikers coming up when I was on the way down. They had crampons, but I don't know if they went to the summit. I'm sure they encountered the other three on the way up. Hope they managed OK.

Don't hike solo, and always have the right gear.

It was a very easy and fun hike. Tons of people on the trail though which sort of takes away from the experience but it was still fun.

A few light wind gusts at the summit ridge and a light layer of snow above about 9000 feet, but no storm clouds and overall a very pleasant day for the hike. Nice to run into banjobonch on the ridge. Note to Eric from Lancaster: please register on this site and send me an email!

Hadn't hiked Old North Baldy in a number of years. A great day, one of my favorite hikes that I had forgotten about. Look forward to making some snow climbs up it this winter.

This the first time I have bagged a 9000 plus peak in 15 years. The hike up took me 1 hour and 56 minutes. The view and the Geocache on top made the trip well worth it.
