LaBoreas Loop  Sucess!

Had a great trip yesterday linking Bald Mountain with 3 peaks on the other side of Boreas Pass: Hoosier Ridge, Red Mountain, and Red Peak. We parked down at Indiana Creek and had a perfect 10-hour day. The views from the top are incredible. Not sure why so many people mention the false summits being an issue as they are all pretty apparent on the topo map. Trip Report.

climbed from Boreas Pass...  Sucess!

...with the "usual suspects". This day reconfirmed why they are called the "Rocky" mountains.

Boreas Pass Route   Sucess!

This was, no ifs, ands or buts, one of the absolutely most beautiful days I have ever enjoyed in the mountains. The fresh snowfall, the wild coastal looking cloud formations, the blue-bird skies peaking through the clouds. Definitely more a committing ridge walk that I think a few of us expected, but well worth the extra oomph to overcome all those falkse summits. Partners: Elissa all the way to the summit; Carol and Laraine to the last (highest) false summit where they said: ENOUGH!

North Ridge & South Ridge  Sucess!

4/23/05 - Hiked up the north ridge. The lower slopes seem to be a popular area for backcountry skiing. Met Chicago Transplant not too far from the summit - little did I know I'd hike with him several years down the road! A great winter/spring hike.

10/31/09 - Climbed the south ridge after "Madonna Dome" and Boreas Mountain. Deep snow in places. Was able to drive almost 4 miles past the winter closure gate on the Boreas Pass Road. Descended the west ridge which delivered us directly back to the car.

North Ridge Route  Sucess!

We put on snowshoes for the approach and looked for a avalanche free route to the north ridge. From there it was a ridge walk with an alpine feel to the summit. Very nice day.

Boreas Pass Route  Sucess!

Scramble over talus & blocks. Found a nice long couloir on the way down to glissade. Once back at my Subaru I found an old piece of board on my windshield with the note, "Hey, I saw something really strange. A marmot was chewing your car under the gas tank. Wierd, huh? Sure enough, Mr. Marmot had chewed through the gas tank sensor wire telling me I had no fuel. Easy repair, fun day.

Ugh! Talk about your false summits. Ugh! Talk about talus and choss. Sweet views of guyot and Breckenridge though! More of a commitment than I expected. Windy and cold but great weather.

Bald Mtn via Black Powder Pass  Sucess!

Hiked from Boreas Pass to the true summit in about 2:45, only 2:15 down with some storms in the area. The views are 360 degrees - even saw Longs & Meeker shining in the sun far in the distance. Only saw a few other people and had the summit to ourselves. Not much left in the way of flowers but the tundra is lush and I suspect there would be a lot in July.

Contra the Boreas Pass route description, we found it easier to just go over the tops of most of the bumps and false summits - there is not that much wasted elevation gain and the walking is substantially easier right on the top of the ridge. On the way up we followed the trail up to Black Powder Pass and then mostly followed the ridgeline. On the return we descended directly down some grassy slopes SSW, both because it looked faster and because some storms were in the area. There are some faint climber's trails on the rocky sections of the ridge - mostly they go slightly west of the ridgeline but end up on top anyway. The talus is mostly solid but still have to test footholds on the steeper parts.

Great hike, but harder work than we expected since there is no real trail after the pass.
