Barad-Dur

Starting the lead of Barad-Dur (III 5.9 A2 or 5.11) pitch 1. Only bolts you see from base on this nearly crackless face are 70 feet up of 5.7-ish volcanic face terrain (June 11, 2006).

Bolts

I was told that all bolts on the first attempt were placed on lead, solo in Robbins boots. The attempt was called off because of a lack of bolts, drills and hangars. It was thought, apparently, that there would be a lot more cracks than turned out to be the case.

Re: Bolts

you might be correct (I have no idea) but I suspect it is a fact that there are few crcks in this rock. From what I know, the bolts were replaced post-this-photo-timeframe and are now of the modern flavor.

Bolts

I worked with one of the guys who put up the route on a fire a few years ago. He did the first three pitches solo, then had to come down because he was out of drills, the rock was much harder than he anticipated. He also ran out of bolts and hangars, he thought there would be more cracks.
