From Parnassus, part of a 5 peak tour
Climbed twice from and to Parnassus. Great day out with few people.

From Bakerville exit
Park your car and walk due north to the summit. 2 miles car to summit with 3800 gain. The description on the main page that starts 100 yards down the on ramp is succinct and accurate. I did my best to make cairns to get you to a footpath that is a huge help. One great thing about the line I took was that it led to a ridge of squat bristlecone pines at treeline, which are often hundreds of years old. They are beautiful trees and it's great they are perched where few people ever set foot. The upper slopes hold awesome spring BC ski potential.

An anomaly! Weather was 60 degrees, sunny and calm...in January!
Hiked up the trail and climbed right up the wind blown west slopes to Parnassus and traversed to Bard. Ridge was also clear of snow.
My first trip of the decade.

winter is coming
different route, bard's south ridge starting from I-70 at the bakersville TH. heavy winds and blowing snow all day long gave us a clear indication that summer is long gone.

windy hike
From Herman TH, not much snow at all, easy hiking, strong wind, went up Parnassus, onto Bard, then continued to Robeson, retraced back and returned (had to rehike Bard and Parnassus) over Woods and Machebeuf. Easy bushwasck back down to the trail.

Ruby Creek Mega-Traverse
Meetup.com hike with Leonard & Bernice (and Leonard's dog, Maya). We got Engelmann & Robeson, then climbed up Bard. We saw no other hikers on the first three peaks. Then it was on to Parnassus.
We found the trailhead near the yellow "chain-up" sign west of the westbound on ramp. Lost the trail a few times but overall a great hike on a perfect day in the mountains. A bull elk and his harem were hanging out above treeline, watching us ascend. From the top we could see that Denver was enveloped in clouds!

Up Parnassus via Watrous gulch. Down from the Parnussus-Bard saddle to pick up the Bard gulch trail. ~9 mile day.

Woods - Parnassus - Bard
Started at Herman Gulch, hiked up the Watrous Gulch trail, and then headed up to the Woods-Parnassus saddle before heading up to the summit of Woods Mountain. Then headed back down to the saddle and hiked up the tundra covered slope of Parnassus before heading over to Bard. There was quite a bit of snow on the slopes over to Bard, but it was consolidated enough that it was pretty easy to walk on. On the descent we headed back to the saddle between Bard and Parnassus to the Bard Creek Trail. We only briefly found the trail near the boulder field before losing it, at which point we hiked up the steep slopes of the southern arm of Parnussus to a small shelf where we found the trail which we took back to the trailhead.

Very nice route. Continuous snow up the gully and the west ridge to the summit. Did it early enough that there was very minimal postholing.

Gaining the prominence
Since I wasn't able to hike it from Parnassus due to high wind and cold weather, I hiked it from the opposite side with Engelmann and Robeson.

Bard, Parnassus, Woods and Machebeuf
Started from Herman Gulch, wrapped around Parnassus and up the SW slopes of Bard. Followed the ridge on over Parnassus, over to Woods, over to Machebeuf, then bushwhacked back down to the Watrous Gulch/Bard Trail Intersection. Nice loop, easy terrain.
Strenuous hike from Stevens Gulch, this route will test your legs for sure, some big time postholing but overall nice day.

Ruby Loop - w/o the loop
We had the luck of the Irish today. Okay, maybe not. I wanted Parnassus, too, but my partners had time limitations. Went up Engelmann, Robeson, and Bard only.
Second time, loop of Ruby Creek from Urad Mine with Scot and Brian climbing Engelmann, Bard and Parnassus. Very windy day, so we skipped the unranked Robeson to stay off the ridge and out of the wind!
With my cousin-in-law Alex ... nice walk up the tundra. The beetle kill trees down low are sad.

Bard Creek Basin loop - Democrat, Republican, Sherman, Silver Plume, Bard, Robeson, Engleman. Started at 11,500 from the east, did the basin, back to the Bard Creek TH. Just under 14 miles, just under 5k' gain.
