First Big Adventure  Sucess!

I've been dying to get up into these mountains living here my whole life. Always had a preconception that I needed a well worn trail to go. Didn't really have a goal to get anywhere, just followed the trail and ended up here! Entered from the Churchwood trailhead. Beautiful view!

Rattlesnakes this year make it too stressful for me  Sucess!

Pass Canyon is a nice hike but the rattlesnake on the trail about 2 miles up kind of ruined it for me after that. A few hundred yards past the "vault" on a narrow, overgrown stretch, we surprised each other, he (slowly) left the trail but turned and coiled and stared me down from just a few feet off the trail. I got by but couldn't really enjoy the scenery much from there, watching the ground so closely.
Had to use the satellite view on my Maps App to find the trail twice when it became too overgrown at turning points to be able to tell where to go (2 1/2 miles up, at a clearing, it makes a hairpin turn but from the looks of the grass, I'm not the only one who trudged straight ahead and into the brush before realizing there was no trail on the other side).
On the way back, a couple hours later, the rattlesnake was in the trail again, in the same spot. Even though I remembered the spot and slowed to a tip-toe to watch for him, with the branches over the trail, I was, again, just a few feet from him when we startled each other and he rattled at me as he (slowly) crept off the trail.
Not going to return this year... overgrown trail and increased rattlesnake issues this year make it not worth the stress.

Barneys, Nelson, and 8100  Sucess!

Barney was very pleasant. I started at 7:20 am on one of the longest days of the year and it was shady until the very top. Similar in difficulty to Grandeur but without the hordes of people. The bushwhack to Nelson was easier than expected as I would find an occasional very overgrown trail, but once it was over, there was still 1000' to climb to the top. Somewhere along the way I decided I might as well throw Peak 8100, Eric's "Nelson Ridge" into the mix. Getting from Nelson to where the ridge splits at point 8497 wasn't too bad, lots of brush, but some faint trails. From there, things got very bad. It was a mix of dense oak brush, dense mountain mahogany, or 2' to chest high shrubs. Sometimes they were so thick I could walk on top of their branches. Getting from 8100 to the descent ridge was no picnic either, but was a little easier. The descent ridge was harder than expected with some minor brush, but mostly the problem was difficult footing as there were many loose rocks scattered about. Just before reaching the summit of 8100 at around 2:50pm I remembered that I was supposed to be at my neighbor's 96th birthday party at 6pm. Whoops. I made it back to the car a few minutes before 6, buised, scratched, and clothes in tatters.

Barneys Peak  Sucess!

I really liked this hike. There are not too many peaks in the Oquirrhs that have trails to the top and are on public land. This one has both. Parking is at the end of Churchwood Drive, which at the time I did the hike was still gated. This added about 2.6 miles each way, but from what I understand they open the gate on 6/1. The route goes up Pass Canyon which follows an old road, which has been long relinquished and in parts feels more like a trail than a road to near the top. Great views all around from the summit. Working in Tooele this was a fun after work hike.

Great Tooele County Secret  Sucess!

Bagged this baby with my buddy Justin nearly four years ago. Not many people know about Pass Canyon. I wonder what that concrete bunker is up there. Anyone know?

View from Barneys is terrific.

Awesome Canyon  Sucess!

Parked at the gate at the mouth of Pass Canyon. Started hiking at 7 am. The trail is excellent all the way to the summit. Pass Canyon is a big canyon filled with amazing views and interesting rock formations. Made it to the summit by 9:30 am. Tried to traverse North to Nelson Peak but the brush is so thick we gave up after an hour and only moving a half mile.

Unique  Sucess!

Climbed from Pass Canyon. Cool volcano looking point from a certain part of Pass Canyon! Climbed Barneys Peak and I may or may not have traversed over to Curry Peak.
