Finally got around to a hike in between random storms. Wasn't bad, had some nice views of the plains. Took about 35 minutes for me going at a good pace. Took the decent as my relaxing time.

first hike on vacation
Seventy minutes or so to the top on a perfect weather day. Hordes of flying ants on top to go with the great view.

One of the Black Hills best hikes
This hike was a pleasant change-up from most of my other hikes in the Black Hills region. Great views and perfect weather for the day.

Bear Butte
This was a great hike near Sturgis. I can see why many people are drawn toward the mountain.

Great view.
Hiked up after seeing the visitor's center. Many Native American prayer flags along the trail. The trail is pretty well maintained. The area closer to the summit was still recovering from a fire when I visited. I liked the viewing deck on top.

Solemn
A solemn hike up, almost every tree marked with native ceremonial flags. I heard flute and drums as I ascended - no lie - someone was playing in a cave about half way up.

The Sound of Footsteps
I have just a small amount of Native blood in me, but certainly enough to appreciate the spirit of this place. Whether along the base or along the trail or on the top, I took stock of standing on the same ground that many Native people have stood on, important people including Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull. I felt this place.

Summit Trail
I have always wanted to hike this since my first visit to the Black Hills in the 1980's. The trail is rocky but very obvious with wood beams used as borders. There is a platform on top with unobstructed views in 360 degrees. The temperature was in the low 80's but could be alot worse if this is done in the summer. Lots of prayer flags all over...

First butte ascent!
Beautiful views. Hiked this on a visit to Rapid City with my boyfriend. He is a native of the area and had never climbed it. Along the trail there are many prayer flags.

Several TimesA really remarkable hill. Bear Butte looks to me like someone dumped a huge pile of sand in the middle of the prairie.
