Training for the AT  Sucess!

A nice hike. The training wasn't good enough because I got my ass kicked in Maine and peaced off the trail.

Summited  Sucess!

One of my first NY peaks. We decided to do it on a freezing day and had a good trip. I have some photos that I am uploading as well. Did Major Welch trail and Schunnemunk Mountain in the same day, makes for a nice day.

About an hour hike. Heavy day use at the bottom. Cars at the top as well. But in between there are some spots with fantastic views.

The parking lot at the top detracts from the mystique, but Bear Mtn is a great spot.

I mistakingly thought Anthony's Nose was Bear Mountain when I first signed this summit log. I don't think I ever made it up this peak but did want to mention all the fun I had going on different hikes with the Appalachian Mountain Club. Fun, social, and as hard and fast as you could want them to be. For my last hike with them before I moved here, I carried a whole watermelon which we consumed midway, on a hot summer day... mmm, mmm good.

Another great hike I did was the first 20 miles of the Long Path from the GWB. Hellacious mosquitos, but neat historical sites along the way, like old missile silos...

I miss that hot and muggy weather (seriously) and all the thick culture and history of the area.

Long uphill climb from the Bear Mountain Bridge. Nice views from the top, however and you can see Manhattan clearly on the horizon. Onward to Fingerboard Shelter.

Route Climbed: Went up the Appalachian Trail and returned on a steeper route Date Climbed: December 21, 2002  Sucess!

On this fairly cold day, my friends and I climbed Bear Mountain. It only took about an hour and a half round trip. Even though it was flurrying, we could see the skyline of New York City on the horizon. It is a short climb, but the views make it worth it! If you plan to go during the winter, be wary of ice... A fall on parts of the trail could send you flying down the mountain. The trail condition was great, but the road which we criss-crossed repeatedly took a little away from the atmosphere. Overall, a nice easy hike.

Route Climbed: don't remember - ....one from the v. large parking lot!! Date Climbed: spring of 2000  Sucess!

Crowded!!

Nice hike with some sections on rock which required hand assists - the road to the summit (which you cross a few times) is a turn off.
