Bear Paw Poppy in bloom on the approach to Cathedral Peaks. Lake Mead Area, Nevada. March 2008. Bear-Paw Poppies (Arctomecon californica) are also known as Las Vegas Bear Poppies. They grow on harsh alkaline soils. Even though considered rare, they are quite common throughout Lake Mead Area.

Thank you for calling this one to my attention. I think the one I posted originally had yellow blooms, but we saw several signs of Wild horses or burros in the Cottonwood Spring area. Do you think these flowers are eaten by burros? I think those burros are much smarter than they look. They must have a specific course they follow through the desert, dependant upon food and water supplies. Awesome shot!
