Took the park ranger's recommendation, and totally worth the short time!
I have made this hike/climb several times. It is a fun, short scramble, and not a lot of people know about it. So, it's never crowded, unlike some of the more popular peaks in the park.
The snow and ice and high winds made this little scramble a bit more intimidating than I thought it would be.
Beautiful day for a nice hike!
Great view of Skyline drive. Fun rock scramble.
I've climbed it on a cool, misty afternoon when the rocks were slippery and there were no views. Most recently I climbed it on a warm sunny day in November. I went to the true summit first, then took pictures from the rocks on the way back.
Those were some truly nice Virginia rocks. It was easier than anticipated, but still a class A east coast mountain. Next time will bring shoes and rope.
I nice break from the same-old same-old of shenandoah trails, with great 360 views at the summit
This hike and scramble was a lot of fun. I wanted to do the loop a second time but I was pressed for time.
One of the many nice trails in SNP. Can get very crowded on a nice day though. I have hiked this trail numerous times
Wish I could recall the exact date. I just remember I was alone and it seems like the leaves were off the trees. Must have been fall 2003 or 2004, but I can't say with certainty.
Anyway it's a very easy and short little hike, but with cool rocks.
It rained really hard on October 27th, and it was very windy the next day. While scrambling over the rocks, a particularly strong gust of wind ripped the baseball cap right off my head and sent it off a cliff!
On the way back, I saw a black bear and her two cubs climbing up a tree.
This was always a fun day trip from UVa.
Second hike of the day after we did South River Falls with my dog. Lot of fun doing the little bit of scrambling at the top.
Great rock scrambling.
First hike of six for the day and one of my favorites. Fun route over the boulders and peaceful on the AT. Not a single person at the trailhead or the trail.
Last hike of the day, the top scamble was nice. Good view.
Curtis (my son) and I were visiting Shenandoah and climbed to the top of Bearfence Mountain. There we ran into a Episcopalian Men's Group that had the annual rite of celebrating communion on top of the mountain every year. They invited us to join in, which we did.
An absolutely perfect day for a hike. I took the day off of work and came up to Shenandoah just because I felt like it. The views on Bearfence were great and the scramble was lots of fun. First time I'd done this hike in a few years.
