Beautiful Even in Death

Beautiful Even in Death

A Tiger Swallowtail wing in Buck Hollow. For some reason, the sight of a dead butterfly always saddens me in a way I can't quite explain. Perhaps it is the vibrant color and energy so utterly replaced by the stillness and quiet of death. Shenandoah National Park, VA-- August 2008

Studies suggest

that winged adults of many (free-ranging
Lepidoptera) live only a week or two,
and that males tend to live a few days less
than females.

Sorry 'bout your loss, Bob. They'll be back
again next summer !!!
