Mountain Loop Classic  Sucess!

Didn't make the summit years before because we ran out of time so we gave it another shot. Pretty straight forward with a few areas the trail peters out through the brush. The view of Sloan from the summit is impressive.

Merry Brook Route  Sucess!

Pretty straightforward routefinding. The standard ramp out of the gully had flagging so it was easy to find. Fun peak, good views at the top.

Not For Amateurs  Sucess!

The fisherman's trail is steep and would not be good in many places if wet. However, I agree with "kevinsa" that the path is great in most places and easy to follow. Look for the hidden ramp at ~5100' elevation, to skirt through the cliffs to more open ground and to avoid the sucker gully to the right of it. We encountered consistent snow above 4400' elevation, and once above the cliffs the snow climb was great. Our team did a number of glissades to descend that section of the route. Low clouds were all around us at the summit, and we waited for an hour for the clouds to open up for good views of Sloan, before we headed down. For a peak that is only 6-7 miles roundtrip, it took longer than we expected.

Bedal Peak  Sucess!

I must confess, I was a little timid about starting out on this one, based on the various comments on how bad the trail was. I can honestly say this was the easiest and most pleasant scramble I did all year. The trail was very well defined and easy to follow all the way to 4600' (where it is no longer necessary), and at no point did it seem dangerous (remember, it is a climber's path, not a Forest Service trail). The most important thing is to find the correct place to start up a dirt ramp (N48 04.600 W121 21.665 - plenty of flagging here) to get around the large rock toe (base is at N48 04.609 W121 21.636). In-step crampons were helpful to cross two short (but very icy) snow fingers on the traverse north of the summit. Other than that, great mountain, great views - I will be back. 2hr 45min up/2hrs down.

Turned Back

Hit solid snow at 4,500'. Snow conditions were great, got to 6,350' at 8:45PM. It was here on our last ascent to the peak, a large, fast moving storm out of the south brought winds, snow and thunder/lighting. We retreated to cover as dense fog came into the timber, we lost the hard to follow trail and were forced to camp in a dry cave for the night. Walked out by compass in the early morning light. We will be back.

Merry Brook Route  Sucess!

The crux of the trip is the bootpath up. That bootpath up was steep, and in places scary. The snow and the simple Class 2 scramble to the summit was a delight. And of course the VIEWS!!!

Merry Brook Route  Sucess!

Brian, Alexei, Greg, Brent and I followed the pink ribbons to the upper snow and slabs. The route was a little challenging but scrambling at the end and views from the summit were fantastic. Neighboring Sloan Peak is a real beast. Glissades made for a fast descent. I will do this one again some time.
