Great to see a post about Utah, or by a Utahn. Devil's Castle is a great peak, and one of my favorites, although it has been a couple seasons now that I've been a truant and only climbing out of my home state. Descending that East ridge is a pretty simple walk, after taking in an unnamed peak that is hardly even a bump above the ridge. ATV tracks can be followed through Albion Basin from there. I do not recall 5th class moves, but the line between 4th and 5th class moves is sometimes gray, and certainly there is a high degree of exposure on the Castle.
I'm the same way since my mountain daydreams usually focus on other areas of the Rockies, but then doing hikes like this remind me why I love living near Salt Lake City. Sounds like getting between the east ridge and Albion Basin really isn't that bad, so I'll have to try it next time I'm up there. Thanks!
Well, loops are always appealing. You do fight some timber and brush before an easy descent, but pretty thin compared with some other Wasatch ridges. Devil's Castle is on my list next July. I am going to stay local most of the summer. So if you want to team up for the Castle, that would be cool and I can message you closer to summer. I've eyed that "central" coulour on the SE of the mountain before and may see if that "goes" for an ascent.
Whoa, that's pretty hardcore. The first time when I stopped at the west summit, a group passed by me who had just climbed up the Black Streak and decided to hike down the easier way. For those up to the challenge, it definitely sounds like a fun way to do Devil's Castle.
