Leaving Sam's Gap on our annual section hike, we got up here just in time. The weather started changing as we neared the summit. Not long after, rain and thunder moved in. Great views! We saw a group of 8 retirees enjoying the summit, as well.
Started off at the intersection of Painted Ridge Road and the AT near the water tower on SW slopes. Ran up and over with my two dogs, saw 4 people on the summit, and continued down to the top of Little Bald (which is not really a bald), and did a return. Maple and Eolus accompanied the whole way.
Started late from Sams Gap at 3:30. Made the rt in a little over 5 hours. Had to use the headlamp for the last mile or so.
Saw less than 10 people all day on a 14 mile AT hike on a weekend. Surprised, especially considering what a great peak this is.
Brutal weather up there. Everything was covered with a layer of ice.
From Sams Gap Feb 2005 and Jun 2007
Encountered 5 other hikers and some people chillin' at the summit. Some of the better views I've experienced on the Appalachian Trail.
