Incorrect directions to the trailhead are not very helpful. Route description is OK.

Big Hatchet

As of September 2008, roads are really bad and washed out to base of Big Hatchet. I had a Toyota 4X4 and was in four wheel drive most of the way. Did not make it into the canyon. Stopped two miles plus below mountains. Roads were really bad; bring a shovel and good spare tire with air pump.Don't even think of driving a car. Watch your speed on the local highways. I got stopped for doing 60mph in a 55 zone. Very beautiful area. Be sure and bring along a firearm. This is only a few miles from the Mexican border and very big drug smuggling area. Oh, we never climbed Big Hatchet, but hiked several miles into canyon.

Louis L'Amour

Just found out that the Louis L'Amour novel "Shalako" takes place in the Big and Little Hatchet Mountains and general area. One of the old hardback editions actually has a map of this area, boot heel of New Mexico, on the inside cover.
