Hiked Mt. Mitchell. Decided to walk over to Craig and this one too.
Only thirty four minutes from the Mt. Mitchell parking lot on the way out to Cattail. Nice views.
Nice view to East on a sunny Fall day with cool breeze.
Quick jog from Mitchell trailhead. I guess it was the Fraser firs, but this trail smelled really good.
The trail keeps getting prettier!
Tagged this peak on my way north along the Black Mountain Crest Trail.
Nice, quiet, tree-covered summit. Had to turn back because of thunder.
Caught this one on way to Gibbs and back. Windy clear day.
My first hike. I did a point-to-point, finishing atop Mt. Mitchell. At that time I was not yet afflicted with peak-bagger's disease, so I don't know if I made sure to stand on the high point.
Started at the Visitor's center and took the Old Mt. Mitchell trail to the summit, and then on to Mt. Craig, Big Tom, Balsam Cone, and Cattail Pk., and back the same way, plus the nature trail, for 3116' of gain.
Kinda feel like we should have done the rest of the range since we put so much energy into getting there. But it had already been a pretty long day and we had to get all the way back down Mitchell and be ready for the Smokey's the next day.
Hiked the Mitchell Trail up to the Mitchell summit, then the Crest Trail to Mt Craig and Big Tom. So sweeeeet up there, i'll go back!
Black Mountain to Mt Mitchell then on to Mount Craig - 6647', Big Tom - 6580', Balsam Cone 6596', and Cattail Peak 6584'. About a 16 mile day. It was muddy and cloudy, but not cold.
We met "Big Tom" in the museum on Mt. Mitchell, then climbed his eponymous peak later that day.
2nd birthday in a row spent here on the East Coast hiking the Appalachians. Loving this tradition. Loved the story of Thomas "Big Tom" Wilson and how he found the body of Elisha Mitchell. Great views from this peak if you venture off the main trail a little.
Drove to the top of Mitchell with "the old folks" and my brother. Frost in the trees made an awesome scenery. Hiked to Mt. Craig and Big Tom and back.
Black Mountain Crest Trail from Mount Mitchell to Deep Gap.
Up and down it on the BMCT; it's very neat when ascending when returning from Deep Gap
An out and back dayhike from Mt. Mitchell SP campground.
