Wrenched my knee on a subsequent winter summit during the descent (no crampons or ice axe). Duh!
I climbed up from the trail that crosses the Cucamonga-Bighorn saddle. The ridge is easy to climb with minimal barriers. I continued from the summit down the face to Icehouse Saddle. Nice hike-added some excitement to the area going off trail.
Having visited all the high spots in the Cucamonga Wilderness but one, Bighorn Peak, I decided it was time for a visit. Had a great day. Had to thrash through some brush on the north ridge. Came down the trail to the west, then down through Kelly's camp. A lot of campers there. Memorial Day weekend. Go figure.
I hiked with Murray Zichlinsky 'til Icehouse Saddle. Murray then went onto Cucamonga Peak while I took the broad north ridge of Bighorn Peak from the saddle to the top. It was about 20 minutes from the saddle to the summit. Signed the register and then descended about 800' to Cucamonga Saddle and continued to tag Cucamonga Peak. A nice workout.
