A little butte kicker  Sucess!

Was denied two months earlier due to snow and a late start, but was successful this time. Took a nice pace and made it to the top in less than 1 hour, then ran down in some spots, made it back in 45 min. Great workout, great views, great little peak.

Better Than Expected  Sucess!

This was much more beautiful than I expected! Much more vegetation than you would expect when you look at the mountain from below, and that contrasted with the boulder fields made for a very interesting hike. Perfect weather also. Might have to do this one again...and the night hike is a great suggestion.

Black Butte Trail  Sucess!

Hiked up with Mai-Anh. Second black butte in three days to cap off a 3 day Oregon-California trip - first black butte I climbed was in Oregon near Bend. Amazing views but could have been better if it weren't for the cloud cover over Shasta.

Lost count!!  Sucess!

Climbed this peak so many times I have lost count, just a great day trip with a fantastic view. This was also another mountain my father took me up when I was younger...7-9 years old. Since that time I average about once every two years or so...superb hike!

Black Butte  Sucess!

Completed this hike with two 9 year olds and two 10 year olds. We had a blast as it was fairly easy and quick (about 2 hours). Beautiful cloudless day. Even saw a motorhome fire on I-5 near the Weed Airport.

Black Butte Trail  Sucess!

Started at 6:30, topped out at 8, back at car by 9. Easy hike, but go early, it gets hot out there. Nobody else on trail or in lot.

Weather turned on a sixer  Sucess!

I was probably seven, but im not sure. It was great weather when we satrted, but on the summit, the weather quickly turned bad, and Shasta's summit was engulfed in clouds down to no higher than 12000 feet. It rained on the way back down, and the winds were at least 70 mph.

Shasta Classic.  Sucess!

Up again for sunset views. Numerous groups on the trail this time, but a great, quick hike nonetheless.

Black Butte Summit  Sucess!

First time my father and I had summited Black Butte, and got it done on our first try! Incredible view of Mount Shasta!! A little bit windy that day but still an experience that I will not soon forget!

Ggreat view of Shasta  Sucess!

You can't miss this little volcano as is looms over Weed and Mt Shasta City right next to I-5. I have always said to myself, "That looks like an intersting, and hot, hike." It was. Great views of Shasta from both the trail and the summit. I had the trail and top all to myself. Stop by The Fifth Season for map to the TH.

No views, no problem  Sucess!

Quick hike up and down in iffy weather. Had planned to do more in the area but BB was the only thing with its summit clear of clouds, so headed that way. Unexpectedly good trail considering this hill is mainly loose volcanic choss. Heavy rain going up and down but got a little window on top to enjoy a dry lunch. Thanks to whoever for the nice windbreak/wall on top. No views except S down I5. A little less than 1.5h up and the same down.

Recommended even if only for the lack of crowds.

free run  Sucess!

Climbed straigt up the N. face from a friend's ranch 1mi past truck village. Extremly tech bolder climbing, better when done on all four so that you can test the bolders for integrity before putting your feet on them. A light touch is needed so that you don't pull "perched" bolders on top of you. Went up then down then up and down and up again, a b-line for the top (apprx 1.5hrs) never on trails. For all that choose to hike during more winter conditions and wish to avoid the snow there are many ways to reach the top on the south face which is normally hotter. Loved the view minus all the roads you can see going up through the tree lines of Mt. Shasta. Found out that the grave up there is from a plane crash. Then went down the South face taking rock slides of small to med grade.... what fun! You can see one of the main "runs" from I-5 as you're travelling N., Its just to the right of the top rock outcropping and makes a lazy S about halfway down. Looped around about 3/4 the way down and ended up having to hike by the freeway for a short while. My advise.... stay lateral at 3/4 so you don't finish your run by the trucks.

all seasons and routes  Sucess!

have done numerous climbs up different aspects of this peak. most routes are highly unstable. a winter ascent after an abnormally heavy snow year was the funnest...there was actually thick ice coating its side, holding the talus together! scarey ascent though.

Black Butte Trail  Sucess!

This is a great hike and the scenery is fantastic. There were still a few patches of snow across the trail in May.
