Was in the area during the Sturgis rally... Fucking insane, there must've been 5,000 summiting that day.
Camped in a KOA, one of the biggest ones I saw up to this day...
Some 600 campsites... it was huge...
Found Sylvan Lake; what a nice place to stay;
We almost ran out of water on the way up;
I had to get down and get some more before getting to the top!!
what a great hike!
up before dawn to watch the sun rise on the trail and back to the campsite before 9:00!
a great day full of wonderful memories
One of my first summits with my dad, thanks dad for teaching me most of what i know about the outdoors
Fun hike with a great view over the black hills and the needles highway.
Fun hike - with my wife and her family on the day after Thanksgiving. It was still surprisingly busy.
ran up to the summit. coming down, I was slowed by a horse carivan. the young cowboy said I may as well stay behind, since horses are faster than hikers. I asked to pass and was finishing my lunch at the T.H. when he arrived with his guided clients. maybe he'll think twice before saying those words again to a hiker.
What a cool hut in the end. Was a little warm even in May. I was glad I wasn't around when it started hailing in Rapid City the next day though.
This is an easy hiking trail for families, that gets steep enough at the end for kids to say they "climbed a mountain." We hiked at dusk in the summer, so the crowds were small but there was plenty of "evidence of horse use."
Climbed a long time ago with a friend when I used to live in SD.
Climbed this RT in three hours on our way from Mount Rushmore to Deadwood. Nice, brisk day, worthwhile hike.
Only person on trail other than a worker up to repair some of the tower. Had rain and fog, but overall had a good time.
Hiked this peak with my 2 brothers and parents on my first trip out west. Very nice area!
Daughter Vanessa and I did Harney Peak on the second year of our highpoint quest. It was number 12 of my 49 state high points.
Sylvan Lake was frozen and snow and ice dominated the forest as we hiked past the impressive towering Cathedral crags across the ridge to the spiral staired lookout on top. from the summit the entire range seems smaller and less intricate than it truly is.
We finished the loop hiking past Little Devil's Tower as the trail strolls steeply downhill through the rock spiked gorge rolling through pines back to the trailhead. Awesome trip that beckons me back to the "Hills!"
Ovenight rains on Harney Peak made for a cool, fresh hike up for our group - Rachel, Tina, Eric, and Tom (see photos). The early morning sun over the clouds below, made for some spectacular viewing - a good example of nature at it's best.
Hiked with cousin and 3 of our kids - ages 8, 9, and 11. We left the younger kids back at the camp. With the ages we took, it was a fun four hour hike with a number of bouldering diversions. With younger kids, I think there would have been more complaining as well as taken more than five hours. We took trail 9 up and 4 down. It was absolutely gorgeous - beautiful forest the whole way. The trail is good. Solo, my cousin and I could have jogged it. Anyhow, the next morning the two of us jogged up and down the Cathedral Spires trail - that was fun.
Pretty cool hike, by far the best part of S Dakota. Nice summit to go out and walk around for cool views.
Hiked it with my sister on the 4th of July weekend. Beautiful scenery.
