Highpoint #4  Sucess!

Drove to Black Mountain from Gloucester, Virginia. Nice, scenic drive from Abingdon, Virginia. Summit leaves a lot to be desired; A small industrial wasteland up there unfortunately. Highpoint #4.

Yuck  Sucess!

Trashed. Maybe things have improved since. Just there to mark it off my state HP list.

Family Highpoints Trip  Sucess!

In 1987 our family did a highpoints driving trip and hit Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Kentucky's high points. This was our fifth in four days, back before the land owners required you to send in a release form. It was the 27th of my 49 state high points, and number 26 for Vanessa, number 13 for Hillary and Holly.

7th Highpoint  Sucess!

Parked the car on 160 and walked the paved road to the top. Climbed through the gate and over to the summit tower, you couldn't climb the tower so I just took a quick pic in front of it as proof that I made it to the "very" top.

Route Climbed: Summit Road  Sucess!

Got here from Grayson Highlands Park and Mount Rogers in less than 3 hours, but must say its the most disappointing highpoint that I have been to and that includes Ebright Azimuth in Delaware. The FAA dome and antennas are a nice touch...not. Least they could do is restore the observation tower. Oh well, check this box HP #7.

Black Mountain  Sucess!

Drove to Appalachia, KY from Mount Rogers, VA shortly before dark. Drove up steep and curvy Hwy. 160 to the dirt road. Road very rough. Parked and hiked to the summit. Very trashy summit. I seriously considered cleaning the area up, but it was getting dark. Found benchmark and left. HP #12.

Uh, I lost my waiver, yeah, that's it.

Make this one part of a multi-highpointing adventure, or part of a trip to nearby areas. Expect to be disappointed.

Highpoint #26. Would have been our last stop in our effort to bag GA-SC-NC-TN-VA-KY in a day, but we realized that we would have hit this in the dark at 12:30 or 1 a.m. (this can be done - we wasted some time along the way). Crashed in Abingdon, tagged the summit in the morning. Agree with others: ugly summit, pretty views in the area.

My first state highpoint. The scenery everywhere BUT the summit was beautiful. I plan to do Virginia next. Be sure to visit Kingdom Come Park if you go to this state highpoint.

Went there in late afternoon, and nobody was around. Regret not climbing that lookout tower. Should have. For all the stuff I read about it being hard to find ,and the permit and all that, there was like no need to worry. Nobody was around, the waiver wasn't needed, and it's easy to get to.

Property was overgrown and looked terrible. By far the worst highpoint so far from an aesthetic standpoint. Marker was covered by weeds under the firetower. The steps to the bottom two levels of the tower were missing. Will decided he was climbing the tower anyway and shimmied up a metal base pole until he reached wooden steps probably 20 feet up. He then walked the steps all the way to the top. Upon his return I asked him how the view from the top was. His reply... "good".

Pouring rain! Couldn't find the highpoint marker at first as it was hidden behind large bushes. The drive was dark and dreary, but it was more open up at the top.

Route Climbed: Summit Road Date Climbed: 1/22/02  Sucess!

I parked my care at the base of the summit road, just between the "Welcome to Virginia" and "Welcome to Kentucky" signs. It was a 3 mile round trip hike on some ice and snow to the summit, with an elevation gain of about 250 feet. The drive up was very pretty, but no decent overlooks to stop and take photos!
