Climbed with LVMC.
Ran up the Trail with a headlamp on a perfect November night. Left the trail head at 6:30pm, ran into a couple of hikers on their way down and was able to chat about the mountain as this was my first time on Black Mountain. Amazing to look across Las Vegas from up there at night! Made it back to the trail head a little after 8:30. One of my favorite night trail runs ever!
This was part of a month long solo peakbagging trip in which I hiked every day and got 70 peaks in 30 days. I hiked Black in the Morning and Railroad Peak in the afternoon. Black was one of my two least favorite peaks of the trip.
For numerous photos and brief route descriptions see the trip report.
This hike is a great opportunity to not only survey all of the Las Vegas valley, but also the various mountain ridges to the east and south and into Arizona and Califonia.
A small slice of Lake Mead is visible to the east, as well as the vast solar fields to the south.
The last 3/4 of a mile are half scramble, half hike and require considerably more effort than the first 2.5 miles, which are on more evenly groomed trail. Be ready to exert yourself at the very end as the trail climbs up the northern ridgeline.
There's an American flag and market and log at the top. Worth it completely!
Close to Las Vegas and easy to follow thanks to these pages. GPS track below, if interested.
My mother, age 72, has hiked this peak a couple times with her hiking club. I was visiting, so she took me and a couple of her hiking club pals to the top. Nice trailhike, great views and beautiful area, despite the new homes. Especially enjoyed the views east into El Dorado Valley.
1st time on the more gradual and far more meandering newly rerouted trail
Pics and commentary are here.
This one was a nice hike and the views were superb.
Quick up and down on a cool, sunny day with a light breeze. Great views all around, and really pretty desert landscape. The sprawling housing developments at the bottom are weird, though, and I wish I could've hiked this back before the development creeped in.
Quick afternoon summit to get some pre-holiday exercise

Climbed via detention basin. Easy hike, fun class II at the top. Nice to be able to point to a mountain from anywhere in Vegas and say, "I've been to the top of that". 360 views are absolutely worth the minimal effort to get up there.
Again on 3/26/16, this time as a run. 1:48 total time, including 15 minutes at the top.
Again on 12/10/16 as quick hike with my wife.
Again on 6/2/18 with some local trail runners as a "sunrise" hike (we missed the sunrise). Came up the 404 for the first time, it was fun.
I wanted to get out after spending time at CON EXPO and this seemed to be the best option with the rental car. The start of the route is a bit confusing but eventually I figured it out. Take the right hand asphalt path to a small electrical station building. Do not go left to cross the dam but continue across a concrete shallow embankment and then onto the path where a sign indicates the Black Mountain trail uphill to the right. Great views. Met an Englishman on the way down who planned on spending a couple of months in Las Vegas and was excited about all the hiking potential of the area.
My 1st summit of 2011. Quick morning outing before work.
Slightly above freezing at the start.

Easy hike, nice weather, fine summit, great view.
The trail to the top is in great shape and it is well signed from the backside of the water cachement area. A quick afternoon hike when I didn't have a lot of time.
Perfect for a night hike and fun anytime.
This peak is practically in my backyard & am approaching my 100th summit. Enjoyable & fairly quick hike.
Best parking is behind the new Rec Center in Suncity - ~6 space parking lot on Shadow Canyon Drive, w/ add'l street parking available. I'd recommend using the designated path, but several of the other ridges make for a more challenging hike.
Climed this Peak for the first time with Meetup hiking group.
Made it to the Peak in 1hour 1minutes. Will make it in 1hour next time.
Climbed around sunset from the detention basin route
Some fun class 2 as you get closer to the summit. Reached the summit from the car in about 1hr 45mins. No wind and clear skies made for outstanding views in all directions. Clear views of Mt Charleston, the strip, and the Red Rock Canyon. At the summit you'll find a flag, and a cleared area with a box containing a climbers log and miscellaneous items.
I'd recommend a late fall/winter ascent of this peak to anyone!
