Took an hour and forty minutes to the summit from the TH on route 15. There are two jars with summit registers and the older one was wet, so I opened it and dried it out in the sun. The older one goes back to 2005! Scott Surgent and Bob Packard were listed in the early entries and two of the more recent ones were SC Grant and Gerry Roach. Not many entries overall for something just off the CDT.
I hiked the trail to signal peak (8920ft) and then continued another 1.7 miles to black peak. The trail skirts around black peak but a short off trail hike will take you to the summit. From highway 15 it was 4.3 miles to the summit of black peak with roughly 1750ft elevation gain.
With Pinos Altos Mountain, 7609 & Little Bear Mountain.
The CDT is a real nice trail but doesn't go quite to the summit. On the way down I followed the old trail which goes right to the top and in the end merges with the CDT right by the parking lot.
Not too good of views at the summit. There was still some snow on the short hike up.
This was a brief layover on the way to Twin Sisters further south along the CDT. Not much of a view from the top, but this was still a part of a great day.
The whole family enjoyed this short trip to the top of Black Peak. We got some rain and hail on the way down, but everyone had a blast!
We made a short hike from the road and the Continental Divide Trail. Beautiful weather and views.
A forested peak tucked away in the Gila National Forest.
