Combined Blackhead Mountain, Black Dome, and Thomas Cole Mountain. Typical rugged Catskills fun!!
Coming from the whites and the dacks, these peaks were no slacks. The views weren't the best, but you can't have it all.
1st mountain of day on warm May afternoon. Nice hike but the bugs were out in full force.
Required Winter Summit for Catskill 35ers. This was my first of the 4 Winter Summits and a fabulous one at that. About 10 inches of snow on the ground at the trailhead with close to 14" near the Summit. Beautiful day, 11F starting out and concluding at 28F. Quick snowshoe/hike, up and back 4hrs. Brought crampons but didn't need them.
Great hike with spectacular fall foliage! Black Dome was the best scramble of the three, in my opinion. Not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. 6hrs round trip with a couple breaks on the Summits.
Took two and a half hours hiking in from the west (Barnum Road trailhead). At least the summit was clearly delineated by the trail intersection.
Did the Blackhead range with three friends. Great weather, not too much ice. Microspikes were sufficient (barely, at times), and I was glad we had one ice axe to share between us.
Went over the Blackhead range and Windham with two friends. Had called a taxi to pick us up at the end to drive us back to our car, but it left us stranded! Was thankfully able to get a ride from another hiker.
with the NYC Hiking Meetup. Also, Windham, Black Dome, and Thomas Cole. Fun, steepness towards the top.
Really great hike, highly recommend!
with Black Dome and Thomas Cole via Black Dome Trail from Big Hollow rd. Came down Batavia Kill trail. Overcast day but views were still great from the ledge. Great first hike in the Catskills.
Had to break trail about 1 mile from the top. Hiking in the tree tops!
Is there a name for the disease of the brain that causes people to obsessively bushwack all peaks- even those with perfectly good trails to the top?
I did this bushwack in the summer and decided it would be even nicer in the winter when everything is frozen in place and covered with snow. Boy- it was cold, my sandwich a frozen block. But the great views made it all worth while.
Approach was from the south.
Nice late summer hike, some chilly breezes at the summit. Nice balsam smell at summits, views on the ledges were nice.
Climbed with Black Dome and Thomas Cole via the Black Dome Range Trail from Big Hollow Road. A nice spring day to be out in the woods. Excellent views from the ledge on the trail leading up to the summit.
Hit Black Dome, Thomas Cole and Blackhead from Big Hollow road. Descended Blackhead on N. side via Escarpment Trail - very icy, would have used a rope if I had brought one. Lots of fresh snow, kept snowshoes on all day.
took the escarpment trail from big hollow road. was definitely a lot more ice than I expected, but only added to the fun. the way the viewpoint west of the summit opened up for views of the indian head range was awesome.
Fun hike on a hot, sticky day.
Great hike - beautiful range in the Northern Catskills.
Climbed several times from all directions, last time was March of 2007 with sub zero temps.
