Blooming Palmer's Agave

Blooming Palmer's Agave

Palmer's Agave (Agave palmeri) is a perennial succulent native to Arizona, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico. In central AZ, Palmer's Agaves grow at elevations between 3000 and 6000 feet (914 and 1829 meters) in mountain foothills and oak woodlands. With their towering, up to 20 foot (6 meters) tall flower stalks, Palmer Agaves are quite conspicuous and easy to spot when they're blooming here in summer. I spotted this golden-flowered Palmer's Agave in mid-July, blooming above the TH parking to the Stewart Pocket area southeast of Payson, Arizona. Yes, that's Cypress Mountain & Cypress Ridge High Point in the distance. July 13, 2008 Please CLICK on the picture for a closer look at the blooms. The flowers smell like overripe or fermenting fruit and are filled with sweet nectar to attract pollinators.
