Bonneville Peavine

and the silhouette of Thaynes Peak. Deso Trail, 6/3/08

Bonneville, or Purple, Peavine (Lathyrus brachycalyx) climbs up the oakbrush. The bloom starts in the lower foothills in May and continues later at higher elevations.

The all-Greek species name means "short-calyxed super-attractant", the latter refererring to supposedly aphrodisiac properties of beans of some Mediterranean peavines.
