We were the only party climbing from Trail Canyon that day. The trail does peter out into game trails. To gain the saddle we went up to the right of the gully on the sage brush, but descended in the trees on the other side of the gully. Above the saddle the trail was fairly good and skirted the 12,140' subpeak. Above the upper saddle there were a lot of braided trails - some nicer or looser than others. We stayed closer to the ridge on the way down. We found a hat. Tell me what National Championship it celebrates and I can send it to you.

Stormy Boundary
Hiked via Queen Canyon route. Added Montgomery Peak as well. Just as we got down the scree field, thunderstorms rolled in making the remaining couple of miles back to the trailhead a harrowing affair. One person in the group was struck by lightning, but he was eventually able to make it out safely.

In Winter
Penelope May-Smrz and I hiked up Boundary Peak from the Queen Mine on January 25, 2015. On the long summit ridge, the wind was so strong, we considered turning back. But we persevered a bit and made the summit. The temperature was in the low teens, but luckily, the snow cover was not too deep. Pen's first 4,000 meter peak in winter, her fourth time to Boundary's summit.

From the Trailhead on Queen Mine Rd
We landed in Vegas on drove up to the trailhead in a rented 4x4 Nissan Frontier. Very glad we took the truck and not an SUV. There were a few places on the 4x4 road that tried the truck. Especially at the sharp uphill right hand turn. If you go you will instantly recognize the turn. We camped up at the trailhead saddle. We couldnt have asked for a better night to camp. The temps dropped down in the high 20's and the wind never kicked up. The next morning we hit the trail as the sun came up. I did get lost on the the ridge above the saddle. I took to the left of the ridge and rocks when I should have stuck to the right. We looked for the trail on both sides and did not see it going up so we stuck to the snow on climbers left of the ridge. I think this may have added an hour to our climb. There was no other climbers on the mountain. We made summit signed the register and headed back down. The trail was visible from the summit and following the cairns down we made great time on the descent.

Queen's Mine
Took 3.5 hours to the summit via the Queen's Mine Route on Oct 6, 2014. Wandered over to Montgomery Peak after and that took an hour (one way) and was a tough ridge.

Boundary Peak
Awesome hike via the Queen Mine route. I camped at Kennedy Flats and got an early start for this one. I did both Boundary and Montgomery and then hustled back to my truck for the 8 hour drive back to SL.
Trail Canyon road was is pretty good shape, high-clearance necessary. Hike was as-described: desolate, lots of scree on the ascent, but straight-forward. Descending the scree was great, though. Nice little meadow with running water right at the trailhead.
What is the current condition on the Trail Canyon route approach road. Last year is was washed out. I'm interested in trying again this year. Has the wash out been repaired.

"2 steps forward and 1 step back" comes to mind when I think about trying to climb in loose shale. It always seemed you were sinking backward on the upper slopes. Had some cows walk through my camp the night before, summitted with a fellow climber from Utah.

Queen Mine Passable
Queen mine road is passable to the mine at about 9400' as of 12/12/2013 via highway 6. I was in a Ford Explorer and had no problems getting to the mine. Attempted to get to the saddle but there was too much snow to drive safely. Hike was awesome, started at 230am with a full moon, light wind and about 10 degrees. Trail had about 5-6 inches of snow. Don't be fooled, the hike only gets harder as you keep going. The last 0.5 mile is nothing but large boulders covered in black ice, very tricky. It was very difficult to get around them and find the route to the summit. Scree was not bad at all, I am thinking probably because it was frozen in place. Had a great time and would rate the hike as intermediate. Make sure you have good solid boots and hiking poles.

Started up the Trail Canyon road, having to move the road closed barriers which indicated water over the road. Everything looked dry, so we thought the road would now be open. We got about 6 miles up from the Hwy 264 junction and were stopped by a complete washout. I see another party was successful in the Trail Canyon route about a month earlier so perhaps the flash flood happened during that time. I am interested in making the climb next year and would like to get an update as to road condition early next year.

Via Queen Mine route
Stayed in Tonopah the evening before and drove down to the Queen Mine turnoff. Was able to drive up to the trailhead (9850') which is past the actual Queen Mine parking area - OK we were lazy and didn't want to hike the extra mile... Would not recommend road in a 2WD. Great climb, bluebird day and the scree is really overrated. Some confusion on route through the boulder fields as there are multiple trails/cairns. But, pretty easy to figure out ... just go up! Had hoped to see wild horses that were noted in previous posts but the BLM had conducted a helicopter "drought gather" and removed 150 of the 228 horses in the Fish Lake Valley area a couple weeks ago - oh well ...
Hiked two miles to the saddle at sunset. Camped in the trees as the monsoon blew in. Coyotes at midnight right near the tent. Morning was crystal, took the steep ridge trail waking up wild horses.
Larry and I summited Boundary Peak via the Queen Mine route. The 6.2 mile approach on Queen Mine Road was slow but passable for most any vehicle. Hike to the saddle was on an easy-to-follow path and quite pleasant. From there it's tough sledding. The path was still identifiable on the submountain but we lost it for the final summit push and blazed our way. There is definitely a path (we found it on the way down) marked by cairns but it's hard to follow. Be on the lookout!
7 on the mountain on the day, all highpointers. We were 6 hours to the summit, 10 minutes at the summit, 4:50 down. Weather was ideal. #29 for me, #9 for Larry.

Desolate Wilderness
State HP #28! Wow, i feel like that was the most desolate peak I've hiked to date. We hiked the main Trail Canyon route, even though there was really no trail the whole time. The dirt road into trail canyon was in terrible shape, and if we didn't have an SUV, we would not have made it 14 miles into the trail head. Once we got to the saddle, the hike up the scree slope up toward the false summits was tough. And we boulder hopped in the upper sections too! Thankfully, i was wearing my go pro cam, and i have some fun videos from this section. We only saw 1 other person the whole day, and they were obviously state high pointing too. The weather was great though, and temps at the summit about 55. All in all, a rough and wild day, but of course, we were successful!

So, I got lost out of the forest and ended up going straight up the bowl instead of the saddle. My hiking partners went up the saddle. When we compared trails it seemed like mine was easier, albeit steeper. The scree seemed to be a little more stable and you slipped less. So we returned through the bowl and "skied" down the scree. All in all, a rough trail but fun.
Climbed via Queen Mine with 2 others. I stopped at the saddle (wasn't feeling well), and they summited. Perfect weather. Road to Queen Mine was passable in a passenger car until about a mile before Queen Mine. We camped on the side of the road. Total RT distance for the summitters was 6.12 miles, and elevation gain was 4770 ft up - 136 ft down = 4634 ft net (all according to GPS).
