after 2nd summit of Wetterhorn  Sucess!

Longer than I expected, great views from the summit, bushwhacked straight down to Matterhorn road later and found tons of mushrooms.

with Wetterhorn  Sucess!

Longer route than expected, its a little farther east than I thought it was. Mostly dry, some minor snow coming off the western false summit but possible to keep the rest of it dry. In fact Wetterhorn was so dry I went over there too even though I wasn't originally planning on it.

post-uncompahgre  Sucess!

hiked across the now warming snow up broken hill's northeast slopes after climbing uncompahgre. the hike was straightforward outside of one creepy, airy section rounding the summit block's west side above some snow and rocks.

Wetterhorn 13er group  Sucess!

This was our 4th summit of the day following UN 13201, UN 13300 & Matterhorn Peak. Although this little peak is quite easy, some vertical walls on the east side of the summit block are intimidating. Easy passage can be found to the south.

from Matterhorn  Sucess!

Did Broken Hill along with Wetterhorn and Matterhorn with a 3:30am start during monsoon season. The weather held long enough to make it over to this unique summit. You have to skirt underneath the cliffs all the way to a narrow gully on the south ridge. Superb views from the summit. Descended an old mining road back to the Matterhorn Creek TH.

As a side thought...  Sucess!

After summiting Matterhorn earlier, I kept looking at this thing from down in the valley and deceided to summit it as well. "Broken Hill" is nothing more than a pile of loose rock and talus held together by sheer will. Reminds me actually of the rock found in the Elk Mountain Range. A nice, small divided summit though. Good weather.

Route Climbed: North ridge Date Climbed: September, 23 2003  Sucess!

After getting off of the Matterhorn at about 12:00 I decided to attempt Broken Hill. At the time I did not know the elevation of it or even it's name. I did not even know if I would even get to the summit. I set off by myself and about an hour later I was at the summit block looking up a 60 foot cliff. I decided that I would not be able to make it. I then looked around and saw a passageway between the summit block and some lower cliffs. I headed down and through there and then started to ascend the mountain just past the cliffs and before I knew it i was on top looking at the summit register finding out the elevation and the name of the mountain that I just attempted. This was my first mountain in Colorado that I did solo.
