Solo (not counting the chipmunk at the summit).
Great trail in good condition. Not that busy considering the trail up Lassen Peak is still closed for improvements.
Perfect snowshoe conditions. Had 4ft of snowpack all the way up. Around 8600ft the snow got noticeably firmer and even icy at spots. Donned the ice axe and crampons and finished up while the others waited down below.
very short hike up but rewarded with very pretty views!
Hot July hike, great views from the top, zero snow on the ground anywhere. Much nicer hike than Lassen is.
Did this after Lassen earlier in the morning. Beautiful cool sunny day.
Pics and commentary here.
Water. Visiting this peak this time of year you know its Spring by the amount of water running off. The first third of the route with its creek crossings and such are very moist. The middle third of the route with significant snow coverage at times is another story. Up near the ridge, I left the snow-covered trail, opting for cross-country. What a beautiful alpine route! And at the top, you've got commanding views in all directions.
Carried crampons & axe but snowshoed the whole way up and down.
Did this a few times too. Its a more scenic climb than Lassen Peak. Did it once in the same day with Lassen. Also done part of the face free solo scramble. There is a chute on the right side of the middle when you can see the face and the scree slope from the main trail. It is quite easy if you feel comfortable climbing about 20ft unopened up a vertical ledge. That is the biggest one. The others are about 5-10ft. The only other thing is be careful, if you go with a friend, not to send the loose rocks down the chute as you climb. The best thing is to stay close together. Shasta and Lassen are both visible and look great from up top. Planning to go up in winter some time and do some snowboarding. Maybe some ice/rock mixed climbing if it forms on the face would be cool.
Great views of Lassen and Shasta, RT time was around 4 hours.
I slept in my camper at the visitor center parking lot, just have to pay the normal tent campsite fee. I overslept so didn't start the hike until about 9:30 am. I only saw 1 other person leave ahead of me, and there was only 1 other vehicle in the lot, but I met a man coming down, maybe he was camped at the campground and just walked to the TH. Total time was 2:52 RT, including 10 min. on top.
Hiked Brokeoff after hitting Lassen Peak earlier. Nice hike with few people.
Climbed in the last day of the year with SMG. Short approach, great views from the summit!
Climbed with SMG. A great peak with a short approach and lots of possibilities for skiing, climbing and general scrambling.
Great place to spend the last few days of the year. Short approach with a great view up top. Base camped at Forest lake with a group of nine from SMG.
Had a great day in the park. The trail is very well maintained and at a reasonable grade for the whole family. Great views of the region at the top.
Good view of Lassen Natl' Park and Bumpass Hell.
This was a fun little peak in the area. Had good vies of Mount Lassen.
Trail was in good condition. Took Jimbopo, Josh Lewis and I three hours, not including our quick scramble up the western subsummit for more views.
Relaxed snowshoeing outing. Snowcamped at 8400' the night before. Something like 14' of snow at the SW visitor center. Traversed ridge to the NW and got a nice view of the cornices.
Have done this one several other times in the winter. Not much avy hazard. One time in December 2006 the last couple hundred feet to the summit was mostly wind-scoured rime ice, glad I brought crampons.
