Relaxed snowshoeing outing. Snowcamped at 8400' the night before. Something like 14' of snow at the SW visitor center. Traversed ridge to the NW and got a nice view of the cornices.
--
Have done this one several other times in the winter. Not much avy hazard. One time in December 2006 the last couple hundred feet to the summit was mostly wind-scoured rime ice, glad I brought crampons.

Ski Trip
Good ski trip but due to lack of snow on the road further up I bailed on a plan to also ski Diller, Eagle, and Lassen. Will be back for those for sure.

Solo hike
Got to Lassen a day earlier than group of friends and did this solo....very enjoyable. A lot of wildfire smoke in the air gave a brownish tint to the views however. Windy at top. Enjoyed!! Photos: http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/401605/

Nice winter trip
Camped in the snow at the south entrance and climbed as practice for our first trip up Shasta later in the year. Super views and liked it in the winter so much went back and did the exact same trip in March 2004.

Right before the park closed
Made that left turn at the bridge and just kept on hiking. Lassen has always helped to take the mind off a girl.

Trail
hgrapid, same bs happened to me...hiked back down a little to get around the "guard" on Lassen, ended up on Bumpus Hell and Brokeoff anyways. Nicer hike than Lassen, with good views from the top, especially of Shasta.
Made it all the way to the park and it turns out the trail to Lassen Peak itself was closed due to a freak rock slide killed a young child. So, we hiked Brokeoff Mountain instead. We also hiked the Bumpass Hell trail to the hot springs.

2nd mountain of the day
Combined with Lassen summiting these two in a day makes for a respectable little bit of hiking. Fewer people on this peak, and the views were better (at least this hazy day). This peak made the 350 mile drive worth the investment.

When the young, cute, ranger smiled at our (single) friend and asked us what we had climbed, I replied: Brokeback mountain.

Great ramble
Great hike! Having done Lassen Peak four times previously, this hike is every bit as spectacular, and infinitely more enjoyable. As opposed to interminable switchbacks, this trail has forest, meadows, trees, and excellent trail the whole way. The first people I met on the trail, was on my way off the summit!

Trail
With my son. A fun hike. Nice views of Lassen and the Brokeoff summit for lots of the trail. Very windy on top, gusts to 40 mph, but not cold at all. Up in 1:45, down in 1:05. Recommended.
