Holy Wind Batman!  Sucess!

I figured this would be a fun little adventure for a mid-week day in January. Made the drive Bruneau Dunes State Park. After getting to the park, I found a sled on the side of the road and immediately pulled over to grab it... Fun! Unfortunately, my big ass cracked the thing and I never slid very far.

Anyway, hiked to the top of the Big Dune from near the Observatory. It was a nice, easy walk most of the way. The hiking got a little tougher on the steeper parts of the dune, but was never too strenuous. On top, the winds were killer!!I could barely see 5 feet in front of me. I think I was cleaning sand out of my ears for the next week!

Sand Slog  Sucess!

Traversed the whole dune from north to south. Super windy on top which made for good kite flying.

Windy!  Sucess!

Fun hike with my son's scout troop. It was super windy, which added to the adventure and gave an appreciation for how the dunes are formed. Trip Report

highest dune  Sucess!

Amazing area. Tons of fun hiking the dune ridge top. Witnessed several thousand geese flocking to the small lake below the main dunes; they were flying in from the north and landing by the hundreds. It was truly an amazing sight to experience! A great place to experience a desolate, isolated landscape.

Various Routes  Sucess!

In the late 70's, early 80's. I think it's wonderful that the dunes are noted here on this site. My days in Idaho are very dear to me.

The Dunes  Sucess!

I've been living on the base in Mountain Home for about a month now, and I finally got around to go play on the dunes. The main dune is huge and quite a little grunt to get to the top, but very fun. There were tons of mosquitos out.

The Wasatch Mountain Club has been organizing Annual ski trips in October to the dunes for about the last fifteen years, I've been the organizer the last 4 years, lately it has been listed on telitips forums also.

Flew a kite...  Sucess!

from the top. We try to make it out here once a year to really feel what a lot of sand in your shoe feels like.

pretty area  Sucess!

Ah, yes. One of the very first places I visited when I came to Idaho. We camped overnight and it was as cold as any night I've spent in the mountains. Walked over the dunes the following day. Nice starlit sky.

Bruneau Dunes  Sucess!

Had to make a quick trip to Mt. Home on business and found a few hours to zip down to the dunes. Great place, but the blinding sand and wind were terrrible.

Wonderful, interesting place to explore  Sucess!

My notes from my journal from the day I climbed Bruneau Dunes... "Sitting on top of one of the dunes at Bruneau Dunes State Park in Idaho. Down below are flocks of honking geese on a lake. They're making a racket, and faintly in the distance I can hear several fighter jets. The lake is still frozen and it shimmers in the intense sun. All the geese are congregated around a center portion that is unfrozen. A flock or two will take off and land at intervals; as they do so the honking increases. The dunes are so sharply set against the bright blue sky, only a few clouds float overhead to soften the view. The sand is a soft tan, fine and smooth. More geese are arriving now and a jet is flying overhead."

Bruneau Dunes  Sucess!

I'm from Mountain Home but only lived there for a short time. The Bruneau Sand Dunes were the closest place to go on weekends. My parents especially enjoyed fishing in the nearby lake.
