From Pt 9335  Sucess!

NV CoHP # 12. Up Peak 11,038 first, then over to Bunker. Really chill outing. Stats were 6.6 miles roundtrip, 3600 ft of gain in about 3 hr 15 mins car to car. Saw a sheepherd with dogs and a (presumably Basque) herder on horseback.

Bunker Hill  Sucess!

Great day for a summit. Saw an archer spotting for some deer, then saw a couple deer enroute (1 on the summit!). Hit Toiyabe Peak 11038 to the north on the way back to the car. Drove out the west entrance to the Kingston Canyon Rd in a 2WD sedan with no problems.

From the saddle below point 9335  Sucess!

10-14-17 W/ Yadahzoemtn. 2nd county highpoint in as many days. Sagebrush-whacked over to the 10100' saddle and were harassed by an east wind which wouldn't let up for any amount of nasty words muttered under our breath. Many patches of snow on the north slopes of the first false summit. However, on our return we found a tall cairn and a number of self-made trail markers along a faint contour at about 10,000' which lead us back to the area near point 9335. Had we only known about this on our way to the saddle... Live and learn.

Basin Canyon  Sucess!

Drove Subaru to 8271' high up Basin Canyon, then hiked up stream, grassy slope, and talus to summit. Clear sunny and breezy. On the way down found the pack trail that leads to just above where we parked and then dropped down to stream

Bunker Hill  Sucess!

Started just beyond the Kingston Guard station. More or less a South Ridge ascent. Awesome mountain with some unbelievable views. Returned the same way I ascended. Nevada County Highpoint #10/17.

from Basin Canyon  Sucess!

I hiked this one with Steven Stembridge from the end of the dirt road in Basin Canyon. Except for some sheep herders (and their sheep dogs) and 100s of sheep, we had the mountain to ourselves.

Alternate Route  Sucess!

Lorraine and I started up the south east ridge from Mahogany Gulch, passing through a herd of sheep grazing on it. After bushwhacking through the thick sage brush found on the lower slopes we came into more open country. Following the ridge all the way to the false (but named) summit, the terrain changed to loose talus heaps above 10,000'. The traverse from the false summit to the high point, although described by at least one person as class 3 was probably no worse than a stiff class 2 by picking one's route through it carefully. There was no register to be found on the summit, only a cairn with a piece of rebar stuck in it. Great views of the range and adjoining valleys. The descent pretty much sucked, as it was down a steep, very loose and awkward slope leading out to a middle ridge that finally dropped down into a brush filled canyon with an abandoned 4x4 track leading back to the car. From here we drove around the range and down to the Columbine Campground to prepare for an ascent of Arc Dome.

Sawmill Canyon  Sucess!

We actually thought we were in Basin Canyon until we began the descent. The hike was a little harder as a result due to more bushwacking and mileage but still not bad. The view from the summit is great and Kingston Canyon is cool. Fun day.

Basin Canyon  Sucess!

Drove about 1.5 miles up the canyon to where the road ended. The switchbacks up the hill had been covered by landslides, but once up that hill the trail reappeared. Forgot to bring a new logbook & sure enough the old one that was placed in May 1984, is down to 1/2 a page.

Basin Canyon  Sucess!

Parked at Kingston Creek and hiked up through Basin Canyon, following first a road and then an old pack trail that switchbacked up to the ridge. Still quite a lot of snow--we had to posthole to work our way up to the main summit ridge, and from there it was a straightforward, though steep, trudge to the summit.

Standard North Ridge Date  Sucess!

Camped at the Kingston Campgroud and drove to elevation point 9335, side hilled over to the saddle.
Took 2:15 to the summit and 1:10 back to car. Great weather since I was out of the sun in the early morning. Then it was off to Jefferson. Was very surprised on how many people were at the campgrounds.

Great climb with Dean. Lots of animal "sign" on the mountain. In other words, Watch Where You Step. Lots of sidehilling to get over to Bunker Hill itself.

Route Climbed: Standard north approach Date Climbed: Oct 3, 2004  Sucess!

Dennis Poulin and I were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of this area as well as the peak itself. The term "hill" is rather misleading as this "hill" is over 11 thousand feet high and has some nasty scree to deal with at a fairly steep angle (not apparent in the photos). We met a group of Las Vegas Mountaineering club members as we descended, a rare event as only a few parties climb this peak each year.
