Butterfly in Loyalsock Creek Bed

Butterfly in Loyalsock Creek Bed

A butterfly perched on a pink flower along the stream bed of Loyalsock Creek. We were very near the end of our journey on the Loyalsock Trail when I saw a beautiful part of the stream teeming with wildflowers that I had to capture on film. To the left is the stream and to the right, up the bank, is the trail. We had about one mile left on our 60 mile journey at this point. That was the sweetest mile on the whole trail. The plant is a spotted joe-pye weed and identification credits go to mrh. (August 4, 2008)

Beautiful picture!

Made even better by the fact that I've traveled through there too! Great job!

Re: Beautiful picture!

Thanks. The plateau of northern PA is my favorite place to explore. Have you been on any other trails up there?

Re: Beautiful picture!

Not for a long time! I worked for a GS camp in northeast PA in the late 60s and early 70s and we took our advanced kids for week long trips to the Loyalsock etc. I did do some short hikes in the PA Grand Canyon in the late 70s.

We have bought land to build on east of Chambersburg PA on the edge of the AT but the economy is keeping us right here in Maryland (grumpy face!)

Re: Beautiful picture!

Wow. Seems like you have been to a lot of places over the years. And the canyon is a superb place. Keep posting!

Spotted joe-pye weed

Your unidentified plant is spotted joe-pye weed, Eupatorium maculatum. I've seen those things over 6 feet tall.

Re: Spotted joe-pye weed

I remember these ones being pretty close to my height and I am just shy of 6 feet. I am pretty sure that I was standing straight up and looking forward when I took this shot, so this one was probably getting close to 6 feet.
