By the Dawn's Early Light

The first light of day on the eastern side of the Calico Hills, with Turtlehead Peak in the background. I had gone scrambling around from Calico Basin and was among the maze of boulders and cliffs when I caught this scene. If it looks manipulated to enhance the colors, it isn't; this is the scene I got with my camera, not my computer. Calico Hills-- Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada-- January 2013

First time? It's an awesome area and becomes addicting.

Re: I

yep. went up to Red Cap, then part way up Juniper peak, then some cragging in Calico Basin before we headed to Joshua Tree. I'm now in love with the desert!

Re: I

Stay away from Zion. You'll be utterly ruined. :-)

Red Cap-- what a cool peak. I've climbed it I think five times now by three different routes, including once with my son. If you go back, I highly recommend Rainbow Mountain via Oak Creek Canyon and also the Monument. Bridge Mountain is awesome as well, but you need 4wd to get to the trailhead unless you know some obscure route from the valley.
