Opuntia ficus-indica is the same species that produces the prickly pear fruit. Photographed at the the saddle between Aliso Peak and Niguel Hill, February 26th, 2011.

You know, I was surprised too. But they are all over the hills surrounding Laguna. I went out to pick prickly pear fruit with BBQ tongs one of the days and I came back with 3 pounds worth.

You did? In Arizona, we make Prickly pear
fruit ice cream out of them.
