Callangate I, looking unclimbable

This is taken from the SW. It's just past noon, so the sun would be very high in the northern sky. judging by the shadows below the big bergschrunds, the snow faces above them are very steep indeed. In "The Andes, A guide for climbers", John Biggar writes that it's been climbed from the S in 1957. "Not easy", he writes. Second that! If the south pertains to the final part of the climb, not just the general direction, that would be from the right in this picture, the face that's just in the shadow. Maybe they climbed the ridge in the center or even the one on the right. Apart from the steepness, both these faces, as well as the ridge in the middle, appear to be blocked by a big crevasse. Judging by the map contours, the other sides won't be any less steep. I'll pass ... 6 June 2011.
