standard approach  Sucess!

I decided to do this "spur of the moment" since I was in the northwest corner of the Las Vegas Valley and found myself with some extra time. It took me an hour and 20 minutes car to car.

Castle Rock  Sucess!

I approached from the north. I saw some neat alcoves in the cliffs of this peak. It was quite windy during the entire hike. There was lots of snow on Mount Charleston across the valley.

Great find  Sucess!

Out-of-the-way hikes like this are why I love SummitPost. A nice long walk through the desert with lizards and jackrabbits, and a fun, relatively quick ascent to the top. Lots of loose scree, not for novices -- my wife stopped slightly short of the peak. I walked the whole ridge; no mayo jar anymore. I looked everywhere.

The road is pretty tough; I'm driving a Corolla and it wasn't fun. Doable, but sadly I'm not sure if I could make it another six miles to the Gass Peak trailhead.

Nice Sunday workout. Found the old mayo jar register w/o a problem.

Tour of the Mojave  Sucess!

Well, I started out the morning by driving from Vegas to what I thought was the Kingston Peak trailhead...but something didn't seem right. I sensed an error (or perhaps a mis-read) in the driving directions had me in the wrong spot - so I decided to leave Kingston for another day.

I then moved on to Shadow Mountain, a trivial peak close to Kingston. Short and sweet.

I then moved on to the Ivanpah Mountain (in Mojave National Preserve), of which I still have a couple named peaks to tick off. Once again, poor directions landed me in the wrong spot...but I was close enough to cross-country it and bag Striped Mountain anyway.

I then moved on to Kokoweef Peak, where for the third time that day, poor directions landed me miles away from where I needed to be. I didn't realize it, of course, until I set out on foot, perplexed, and eventually climbed to the top of a ridge...and spied Kokoweef in the distance. Ugh, I had somewhere to be, so I left it for another day and headed home.

Well, a last minute change of plans had me soon driving to Castle Rock. No bad directions...and the summit views were fantastic. No register found, though.

Castle Rock  Sucess!

Easy hike. It was a cold windy day though. Views of Las Vegas and surrounding area were stunning with all the snow topped peaks.
