Cerro Castolon  Sucess!

This peak is beautiful and enticing yet fragile and dangerous. I felt like the mountain gets smaller with every ascent. Great views of the river.

attempted the summit

tried from the east side, made the ridge above the lower cliffs, got ~40ft from the summit, turned around to try it another day with more confidence. fun but exposed 3rd-4th class climb

East Face  Sucess!

Hands down the best scramble I did in Big Bend during my visit there. This summit was particularly satisfying as, while researching peaks in the area before our trip, I'd only come across one or two brief comments on the web suggesting this peak was difficult/class 5. From a distance, it looked like there were cliffs guarding all sides of the peak, and I wasn't even going to bother trying to climb it, but Nga encouraged me to go and try. Thanks babe. :-)

Went up the left side, finding it to be pretty darned spicy in places--steep, sustained exposure, a few tricky moves, and loose as hell. I was surprised (and very happy) to discover on the descent a really easy alternative on the right side (skiier's left) that bypassed all the exposed stuff I'd climbed up.
