Nice hike

Hiked Pico Mogoton with my guide Hendry, arranged through Ramon Jiminez via WhatsApp. His number is +505-8827-0595. He only speaks Spanish, but through a combination of google translate and, mainly, his patience, we were able to have some good conversations. Both Ramon and Hendry were excellent. The trailhead for the climb is at Ramon's coffee farm, 10km from the road, and you need a 4x4 to get up the track to it. We followed the circular route, up along the river route during the ascent and back down the ridge route. The path is quite overgrown in places and difficult to see, so I was happy to have a guide. It's a nice hike though some very pleasant forest. We hiked it muy rapido in 4:15 h.

Nice and warm

Nice and sweaty day. Had two local guides from a coffefarm, who guided us to the top. A one-day adventure.

One day bike and hike   Sucess!

The day started and I strolled through the streets of Ocotal. I was searching for a rental bike that would get me to the base of the mountain. At 6am, I talked to a local at the 'best fitness center in town' who thought he could hook me up at 8am if I came back after his workout. I went to the market, found breakfast and snacks for the day. By 8:30 I was pedaling my way east out of the town on a no-suspension Central American street bike with a spare pump and a day bag.

Long story short, I made the summit and got back by 8pm. Throughout the morning I was wondering if bringing a bike was a mistake. I was pushing a lot! But the return trip was much much faster and the steep mountain roads were a big rush. On the return trip I even did a front flip over the handlebars, and slid down the dirt road until the friction from my forearm equaled my forward momentum. All in all, I liked the mountain and had a great day.

The hike through jungle   Sucess!

Despite the warning signs about the mines we pushed on. We wouldnt have found the summit without a guide. guide a must, even tho he ripped us off. the climb itself is unique, but the summit is nondescript.

Mine all mine  Sucess!

Walking through minefields is without doubt the strangest leisure activity I've yet experienced ...

highest point in Nicaragua  Sucess!

Hiked up with Roberto and about 25 other people from the local Nicaragua tourism board. Amazing hike through the mountain stream and then through the cloud forest. Did see many warnings for mines and also some old bunkers used by either the Sandinistas or Contras for ambushes during the war. Stayed in the finca the night before and headed up at around 6am.

Cerro Mogoton  Sucess!

I climbed Mogoton with the only experienced guides in this part of the world,Roberto and Bayardo. They own a finca at the trailhead, great people to hike with.I recommend staying at the finca the night before(an amazing experience). The climb is moderate and fun, first thru a creekbed and than up a muddy ridge. If you are with the guides it is very safe(do not attempt otherwise). The cost is about 100$ US.Check out their website. The distance is only 2.5 miles roundtrip but it will take you about 6 hours.

Mogoton  Sucess!

Christian is right. Mogoton is still covered with mines. I was determined to climb it, and ended up finding a local guide (Bayardo) to show me a route. He has a finca near the base of the climb, which sounds similar to the spot Christian began from. It was eerie climbing through fields that had been demined. I would never do this climb alone!

Amazing!! Extreme!!!  Sucess!

Full cover with vegetation, without trail, climbing and jumping rocks and finally sound of many explosions, detonated by nicaraguan's army trying to find mines in the mountain. Is really scary. But is an amazing trip.
