Birthday Summits  Sucess!

I've climbed/ hiked this mountain from the south side (except one year, when I did the south to north loop) on my birthday for 5 years, except for 2007.

After Conference R&R  Sucess!

Needed some R&R after a four day conference on the strip. Climbed up one of the gorges just off the Cathedral Rock trail to make it more interesting. Had unbelievable views (and a nice cough) of the smoke blowing in from the San Diego, CA fires. Its amazing how dirty the air over Vegas was! We summited just after sunset as the winds and cold were picking up and walked down the south loop trail under a full moon. Gorgeous hike with awesome views. Can't wait to go back again.

Snowy slog  Sucess!

Made the mistake of taking the south loop at this time in March. You see, the south loop goes up via the north facing side of the valley whereas the north loop goes up via the south face of the valley. Anyway, about a mile out from the TH the trail disappeared under the snow and I was on my own. I spent the next few hours post-holing in snow at times up to my waist and cursing loudly. :) The summit however offered great views and it was nice to get out of the Vegas smog for a little bit. Almost got lost on the way down, but I was safely back at the TH before dark.

Didn't make it...

An overnighter on Charleston, but had to descend in the middle of the night due to my friend getting sick. Ooooooh well.

South Loop to North Loop  Sucess!

I decided to climb this peak because it is on the western departure route from Nellis AFB to the Nellis Range Complex. It looked cool from 15,000', so why not check it out from the ground! When we returned to Nellis in October for a few weeks it seemed like a good opportunity.
I climbed using the South Loop trail and returned via the North Loop / Trail Canyon route, which made for a slightly longer round trip. The change in scenery was nice though and I liked each trail. The weather was really beautiful, but slightly windy and cold at the summit. Some iced over snow at the start of the North Loop made the decsent slighty more difficult initially. Overall - this was a great experience and something cool to do in the Vegas area!

SLT  Sucess!

Not much snow this year. As this mtn. is in the backyard (no, not literaly), I make 2-3 summits early season to train. Still a great slice of mtn. scenery, aspens and all, in the middle of the desert.

Ascent via South Loop/Descent via North Loop  Sucess!

A lucky Friday the 13th hike with buddies Ed and Ben. We enjoyed perfectly clear skies, little wind, and warm temps all the way. We took a leisurely 8.5 hours to complete the round circuit. It was bone dry all the way too--not at all like my July 2005 trip.

North Loop/South Loop dayhike  Sucess!

Somewhere between Lee Peak and Mt. Charleston is where the North Loop trail started to get beautiful, and it stayed like that for most of the way back via the South Loop. Really nice area--shame my camera batteries ran out right around there. :-(

The summit was cold and windy, so I didn't spend long up there. Oh well. I'm pretty sure I'll head back here again sometime.

North Loop/Trail Canyon trail

Late start and no plan to bivouac led to me not summiting but still a great winter day alone on the mountain. Snow above 10K left me postholing a bit but I really enjoyed it and plan to return for another try in winter.

Via Lee Canyon to North Loop

This route shaved a lot of time off the normal trails. More snow would have made this route a lot more fun. It was a challenge to go through the avalanche debris with limited snow. We couldn't get a great axe hold and mostly climbed class 2-3 with a few icy steep slopes. This route is best left for mid winter.
