Windy Fall day  Sucess!

We summitted on the South Loop Trail as an out and back. Lovely fall colors down low. Saw some mule deer on the ascent. Sunny but cool day with stiff winds once we reached the ridge. We did not feel the altitude at all. Saw one other person ascending as we were descending so had the mountain almost to ourselves. Saw a lot of plane parts - what's with that crash!

Tomorrow -Peak in a storm! = crazy / fun

It looks like the weather is going to get crazy up there 30-45 mph gusts , rain- hail, sounds fun!
This is my second attempt. Did the peak last summer in 7 hr (south loop)
Going with a buddy of mine , his first peak, :)
Wish me luck!

Re: Tomorrow -Peak in a storm! = crazy / fun  Sucess!

Great hike! Weather was great, light wind , high 40s low 50s, up and down south loop in 7hr total. 30 min lunch on summit, and about 15min worth of breaks during the ascent.

For a good pace shoot for-
2 hr to main ridge
2 hr from ridge to the summit
2-230 for descent

south loop 9/08/08  Sucess!

2nd try, 1st time i made it!!!, took the south loop. i left at 6:15 a.m. as soon as it was light enough and made it back to the trailhead at 6:55 p.m. 12 hours and 40 minutes, very grueling long, long day but it was amazing to actually make it. i trained for it the previous 7 weeks by climbing over 2200 flights of stairs, it helped tremendously, coming down was actually harder on my legs than going up, tough on the knees and quads too. the views along the way were just great. what else was really cool too was the last 600-700 feet to the summit are above the timberline, no vegetation whatsoever, only broken rock, you feel like you're on the surface of the moon! one bit of advice i would give to anyone considering climbing mt. charleston, about 80% of the trail is loose rock and i don't mean gravel either. trekking poles are a must for safety in my opinion, i saw several people who didn't use them but i think that they're an absolute must. it's a very remote area and if you fall or twist an ankle way up high on the mountain, you could find yourself in real trouble very quickly, cell phones don't have reception up there either. a note on the windshield about where you're going and when you expect to be back could be a lifesaver as well especially if you're climbing alone. it was a great experience[even though i got caught in a hailstorm on the way down]. next time i might camp out and make it a 2 day trip

Trail Canyon to North Loop  Sucess!

Age 10 months -- carried by Daddy. My highest summit yet. I wonder how many other people my age or younger have been on this summit. Probably not many. I am just fine after this hike, but Daddy looks really tired.

After Conference R&R  Sucess!

Needed some R&R after a four day conference on the strip. Climbed up one of the gorges just off the Cathedral Rock trail to make it more interesting. Had unbelievable views (and a nice cough) of the smoke blowing in from the San Diego, CA fires. Its amazing how dirty the air over Vegas was! We summited just after sunset as the winds and cold were picking up and walked down the south loop trail under a full moon. Gorgeous hike with awesome views. Can't wait to go back again.

Snowy slog  Sucess!

Made the mistake of taking the south loop at this time in March. You see, the south loop goes up via the north facing side of the valley whereas the north loop goes up via the south face of the valley. Anyway, about a mile out from the TH the trail disappeared under the snow and I was on my own. I spent the next few hours post-holing in snow at times up to my waist and cursing loudly. :) The summit however offered great views and it was nice to get out of the Vegas smog for a little bit. Almost got lost on the way down, but I was safely back at the TH before dark.

Didn't make it...

An overnighter on Charleston, but had to descend in the middle of the night due to my friend getting sick. Ooooooh well.

South Loop to North Loop  Sucess!

I decided to climb this peak because it is on the western departure route from Nellis AFB to the Nellis Range Complex. It looked cool from 15,000', so why not check it out from the ground! When we returned to Nellis in October for a few weeks it seemed like a good opportunity.
I climbed using the South Loop trail and returned via the North Loop / Trail Canyon route, which made for a slightly longer round trip. The change in scenery was nice though and I liked each trail. The weather was really beautiful, but slightly windy and cold at the summit. Some iced over snow at the start of the North Loop made the decsent slighty more difficult initially. Overall - this was a great experience and something cool to do in the Vegas area!

SLT  Sucess!

Not much snow this year. As this mtn. is in the backyard (no, not literaly), I make 2-3 summits early season to train. Still a great slice of mtn. scenery, aspens and all, in the middle of the desert.
