A spring climb  Sucess!

In the last week, the Apenninic mountains below 2500m are turned from winter to spring... At the lower altitude, Terminillo lost 70cm of snow, due to the southern winds blowing since the last w.e.

I repeated Chiaretti-Pietrostefani couloir for the third time this season, but the feelings (light, colors) were completely different: spring is come!

Some technical info (and pictures): the snow was still abundant on the bottom of the couloir, but was very soft; the steps of the ridge are completely covered by snow; the short goulotte at the end of the gully had few snow and many grass emerging...

In short: the climb was an easy staircase, with only a tricky passage in the little goulotte.

Many snow  Sucess!

Many snow in the couloir. No ice and deep tracks make the route quite easy. Passable conditions (some grass) in the final narrow goulotte (on the right at the exit). The steps on the ridge are covered by a deep snow layer: no mixed-climbing, but very steep slopes of soft snow.
The weather was foggy and quite windy (about 50-60 Km/h)

Passable conditions  Sucess!

The couloir is covered by a medium depth snow-layer in the bottom and in the middle part, there's few snow in the upper. The snow is quite hard in the first part, then becomes soft in the middle and return quite iced in the upper. In the middle part of the couloir there's a short rocky step covered by pure ice: is high only a pair of meters, but is almost vertical: keep attention. We didn't exit on the left, by the easier way, but by the narrow and steep (about 60°, some short step maybe more) couloir on the right: the snow in this narrow is not good (thin and not supporting axis and crampons): not advisable!
The steps on the north ridge were with few snow and not too iced: no problems!
Second step short clip
