Start of the trip  Sucess!

Still another disappearing summitlog. Why bother entering these if they get deleted by the ghosts in the coding?

After driving out and seeing a bobcat on the road to the TH at night, Flanders and I hiked up this one in the morning. Then cross-country scrambled over to Burger Butte on a fun granite ridge.

Last Wallowas hike of the year  Sucess!

With Troy B, a fairly quick hike up from Buck Creek TH to the saddle with Burger Butte, then climbed the south ridge. Fortunately no hunters at the campground, and none up the trail. Summit was shrouded in clouds so views were minimal. We traversed the ridge to Burger Butte and got caught in a downpour just as we reached the summit of that mountain. A long wet hike out in constant rain.

Buck Creek TH  Sucess!

Hike the trail and scrambled the west Ridge after hiking Granite Butte from Buck Creek TH over Burger and Sand Passes and back. This was my first time in the southern Wallowas since 1972 and I was very impressed with the possibilities in the area.

Back to China Cap  Sucess!

Every August we have our family Reuion in High Valley, just outside Union. This year my cousin want to do a little climbing. We got up early and headed for Buck Creek TH. Great trip, the views from the top were not the best because of fires in the area. Still had a lot of fun.

Route Climbed: Trail to Scramble NW Ridge Date Climbed: June 1999  Sucess!

Mid-June climb, a pair in the party brought snowboards and after topping out in the early afternoon for lunch found a swath of snow on the northwest ridge where we dug a jumper and watched them carve up the slope. Easy hike with good weather and hiking conditions.

Route Climbed: BP Trail/ NW Ridge Date Climbed: September 12, 2004  Sucess!

An unplanned detour after not being able to complete our initial plan. Friday 5pm after work drove out to Sawtooths in ID and with the loss of 1h (zone change) got to TH at 5am (that last 5 miles of unmaintained FS road DO take about 45 minutes). Slept till 8am and started our approach hike to Finger of Fate at 8:30am. Got to base at 11:45am only to find a party gearing up. It took them until 1:30 for both to get up the (rel. easy) P1. We started behind them but bailed at about 3pm as the 2nd was still working on P2.....it's a 7 or 8 pitch route with crux at the top = no chance of making it in daylight...........no summit.

Hit the wallowas on the drive back on Sunday . Kind of pissed with ourselves (should've not slept at TH at all) about missing what was possibly the last opportunity of the season to nail an alpine route. Oh well, next year.

China Cap was a 4h car-to-car hike at a very casual pace. Approach trail is kind of boring and initially ugly crossing much clearcuts.............what's the deal with leaving 3 mature trees per acre of clearcut forest.....is that the Bush forest fire prevention plan at work = "thinning" out the woods?
